They were already being raised by a(n undiagnosed but come on) narcissistic sociopath who can’t really feel love or empathy and murders small animals for fun. Even before the malnutrition and drugs, they were looking at years of therapy and realizing “oh, that’s not normal, I was just abused.” Nick was always determined to burn their inheritance and likely didn’t want them to go to college because it would take away from what he sees as HIS money.
