Swords were way more expensive and time consuming to make than maces and axes back then since the entire weapon is a relatively light, finely made metal implement that has to be sharp to actually do any damage (just imagine how hard it would be to forge a double edged arming sword compared to a simple axeblade or a metal ring/ball to put on a stick).I disagree. I'm not a historian nor a weapon buff so this is just my own opinion that might be horrifically wrong. Swords were probably the most important weapon, albeit as a sidearm. Not everyone-especially poor infantry-wore plate armor, and even then it's still very possible to slip swords and other sharp weapons into gaps and other exposed parts. Plus they were quite cheap compared to other weapons, even if they could be expensive if well made. As a bonus I'd say spears and other long reach weapons that required simple movement were kings of the battlefield, probably. Swords weren't the ultimate weapon of course, but absolute worst is just wrong...again, imo.
Also wait a second, I swear you could masterstrike with other weapons? I haven't played KCD1 in a while but I swear you could with all but polearms. Did...they restrict it in the second game?

Right? What the hell? That Cuman shit should still be an incredibly fresh wound, like @30+GameOvers said this is just a massive humiliation ritual meant to, like @Deus Exica said, demoralize people until they learn to bend over and take whatever comes their way, even better if they bend over backwards to defend it.
A lot of people handed their swords down througn the generations because they couldn't afford buying new ones. An arming sword in the middle ages was really more of a status symbol a man at arms or retainer would carry around to show he's hot shit.
The abundance of swords in KCD is stupid imo, most peasants and bandits should carry clubs and axes because they're much easier to make. Any relatively well off person having a sword on their belt was more of a renaissance thing (especially in a backwater like Bohemia).
On top of that maces are also way easier to use than swords because you don't need to learn to align your edges properly when striking, you can just mindlessly whack your opponent until he's dead.
Axes are admittedly kind of hard to use in combat because you can easily miss with the blade and hit your enemy with only the handle, plus they're less nimble than swords so you have to be more deliberate with your strikes and you have to still align the blade properly so the axe doesn't just glance off, but at least you can use most of them as tools.
