Analogy time: I always likened those early fgc days like the first few years of the UFC where it was a couple legit fighters and a bunch of titty bar bouncers and strip mall karate senseis Phil thinks he was the Royce Gracie or Dan Severn of that period when in reality he was the sumo guy who got his face caved in or the black dude who wore a single boxing glove.

Slight PL but as someone who also grew up on the east coast and frequented a lot of the same arcades and east court tournaments Phil mentions. Hearing him call himself a “former pro fighting game player” always irked me.

This analogy sums that up perfectly. At the time of Phil’s peak in the fgc there was really only a handful of people you could truly consider “pros” and Phil was definitely not one of them. Putting yourself into debt flying around the country to enter tournaments doesn’t make you a pro.

He’s never been sponsored every tournament he’s ever been to was paid for out of his own pocket. Outside of maybe some CT locals I doubt he ever even made a profit off of anything fgc related during that time.
