I think we need to be careful when suggesting an entire medical system has “failed” us. That’s suggesting the system should be infallible and have every answer to every question at their fingertips. That’s not, and never will be a reality. Diagnosing the cause of issues can be a very long, complicated and costly process. Its usual that once a referral to appropriate specialists that testing starts with the most common working diagnosis. The testing will usually also start with the least invasive, easiest, and cheapest protocols, over time moving through to more invasive and costly testing. These things all take time, often years, and sometimes there isn’t an answer to be had. As frustrating as that is for someone dealing with such an illness, it isn’t the doctors fault for not having all the answers from the get go. It doesn’t help either that the longer it takes to get answers, and hopefully a solution, the more stressful the situation becomes for the patient, and the increasing stress levels often further exacerbate the symptoms.Maybe it was misplaced but I was also failed by the entire medical system for seven years straight. Until you’ve been in my shoes it’s easier to say that because you’re not living this disaster. Now I know for the future.
A “failure” of the entire medical system to me would involve ongoing negligence, and that’s not where a resolved “medical mystery” sits even though it feels that way for the patient. I’m glad you found your answers eventually, and sorry it took so long to do so.
I have never, and never will listen to one of Anna’s medical mystery podcasts. She’s just not credible, and nor are any of the woo hoo doctors she has so far introduced to the universe. To me that makes them all as insufferable as Anna herself. If anyones been “failed” by the medical system it’s Anna, but it’s also her fault for doctor shopping for ones that will tell her what she wants to hear rather than deal out the harsh realities of her situation. Anna’s story is not a medical mystery, it’s a lifestyle consequence.
