I'm more so talking about how you aren't going to go several years for say Robin to get a fight or characters not to even make a background appearance. I love One Piece, but I'm not going to say it's perfect.
If you want a grand narrative like One Piece I wouldn't bother.
Quality over quantity, for all of One Piece's six trillion episodes, at least most of them are surprisingly canon.

If you go into Fairy Tail expecting One Piece you will always end up hating it, it's best to ignore dick waving and pissing contests between fans fighting over what series is superior.

They offer very different experiences and it's best to look elsewhere if you want a long epic I would suggest to try reading Kingdom. Fairy Tale is a series if you want fun characters, fan service, and to turn your brain off.

I've heard about Kingdom, what's the general vibe of it? I might consider getting into that later if I can.

I've rewatched Evangelion plus End once more and I have to say you just don't get this kind of animation anymore. Hell, even for the 90s it was a lot if what was going on behind the scenes is any indication.

What I'm more interested in are the shows that inspired Anno and co. I have watched a few Tomino shows, but I've heard in particular that Space Runaway Ideon is the one that was like a prototype Eva, is that so?

Historical manga with some liberties taken with a focus on large battles and the strategies employed with some politics as well. While it may sound somewhat boring from this description the art is great and it is very intense.

Out of all the influences for Eva Ideon is the closet to it in tone and structure.

Has anyone seen black lagoon recently its crazy to me that this show released in 2006 because the animation is still pretty good what you'd expect from 2000s era madhoues i suppose i was wondering why it only stopped after two seasons plus OVA but it seems that the author of the manga is really slow so there's not really enough material to work with which is a shame because the characters are really cool mainly revy and rock

Leave Black Lagoon to manga from here-on, things have changed way too fast since 2010 for a third season to be accepted by the anime watchers anymore, neither will the dub continue to be crass and offensive.
yeah good point actually i feel like the dub really carried that show quite a bit, it'd be boring if they replaced them with generic anime protag number 2000 voice actor. But is anything in the dub really that offensive apart from when revy calls that chinese girl chinglish which is pretty tame i feel.

Ideon is a solid mecha anime but I definately think it could've been cut in half as the more "interesting" and "notable" part of Ideon only really shows up at around the halfway point. Be Invoked is pure kino.

Yeah the mangaka likes wanking off hollyjew more than actually continuing his work. I used to worship the series, but I've long since grown tired of being shown the world through the eyes of propaganda victims (hollyjew movie fanatics), which Rei Hiroe obviously is, just like Hideo Kojima. The only "shocking" thing BL does by today's reddit-standards is use words like Cunt and Faggot, which it does get points for... But even innocent comedy anime like Cromartie used the word Faggot, so it isn't really a big deal. Black Lagoon also didn't dare use words like kike or nigger, despite having an entire corny neo-nazi episode (like ALL hollyjew-influenced products do) which would have given them the perfect opportunity. It's as you say, Rock and Revy's relationship is the most interesting thing about it. However...

The events of the Roberta OVAs pretty much turned Rock into Light Yagami WAY too fucking fast and thus broke Rock and Revy's relationship. The anime was developing Rock nice and slowly, but then you get to the OVAs and Rock is not only devising the ultimate Keikakus, but his manipulation skills have somehow ascended to Johann Leibert psychopath-levels. Yet just as quickly as Rock begins to truly feel himself as a villain the OVA reverts him into the same ol' downtrodden out of place Japanese business man with a heart of gold, like he didn't just manipulate everyone, including children, into life-threatening situations. They try to carry on at the end of the OVAs like it's the end of season 1 episode 7 or some shit, like Rock and Revy are about to share a cigarette kiss (they even do indirectly!)...
vlcsnap-2025-02-15-09h43m07s802.png

Here's the thing for those who haven't seen it. Rock manipulates Revy (who ends up double arm shot) to the point where she's breaking down and having PTSD trips in her room about the time she was Raped By A Cop In Jail... Then she goes and beats the fuck out of Rock for being an arrogant shithead the whole OVA, even screaming at him that they don't know each other, things couldn't be worse between them.

But 5 minutes later they're sharing an indirect cigarette kiss like it's just business as usual. Their relationship should be genuinely at an impass right now, possibly even irrepairably damaged. Rock's descent into a twisted robin hood was teased, but the show ends on an expectation that "the usual Black Lagoon antics" will just continue on.
It just ends way too quick and "safe" for my liking, with the characters going from 100-0 and it being awkward. What's worse is that if you actually go read the manga (what little there is), in the next arc Rock and Revy are right back to normal like nothing happened. So even if the anime were to continue we'd just get more freak of the week shit. I've written Black Lagoon off along with unfinished works like Berserk. Sure i'll keep sticking my head around it to see what's up every now and then, but the "ground is salted" so to speak, and I can't invest in it. The releases are too sparse, the product too far from completion, if it even gets there.

Random 80s shows like Dorvack are still beloved today; will you be able to say the same about My Hero Academia or Oshi No Ko or whatever FOTM in 40 years?
Well, It's not exactly a fair comparison. I haven't watched Dorvack but what I do gather is that it's a series made from the ground up for television without being based on anything else, is that right? I find that anime made specifically as anime are very different beasts than adaptations. My Hero and Oshi are still based on a serialized work which forces adapters to turn into pretzels to properly set up seasons of content that may be absolute dead ends depending on if the manga crashes and burns or not.

So for your specific comparison, it makes more sense to compare My Hero and Oshi No Ko to something like Dragon Ball or Ranma. And no, I very much doubt MHA or OnK will stand the test of time as well as DB or Ranma outside of nostalgia though a big part of it is how much both series shat the bed on their endings. As a mostly manga consumer, MHA had been shit for years before it ended and Oshi no Ko had a huge dip in quality (well, like pretty much anything made by that mangaka when he gets bored), their endings were disasters and since both are relatively "serious stories" I think they are a bit too up their own ass to have the appeal something like Dragon Ball had which is more of an adventure comedy.

Now going back to an apt comparison with Dorvack... I'm drawing a blank and I think it's kind of related to what you wanted to allude to. How much anime is NOT an adaptation of some LN or manga right now? This is an honest question, I read more manga than watching anime, but can't think of anything from the last 5-10 years that was anime only and set the world on fire. And well, it's one thing to make something thought of from the word go as animation, and another grabbing something from another medium and adapting it, that some of those adaptations can be fire doesn't change that it's more transformative than creative.
Well, the retard is the one that correlated human devouring demons to his minority pet project of choice, says a lot about what they really think.
farms, is it worth starting FMAB?
I'd say very firm yes but...
Did you see the original series?
If you didn't I would still watch the original and even if you don't want to I would still recommend watching the early parts of FMA before the switch as they rush through things in the beginning of brotherhood.
I also believe the original series has it's merits. I cannot really emphasize how much Brotherhood speedruns through the story to cover what the original FMA covered and it really impacts the emotional payoff of some of the early moments. I also suggest watching both anime honestly, though maybe spaced out. There are autistic spreadsheets of optimal ways to watch both series together to make something cohesive, but I honestly don't think it's worth the hassle.

I personally favor the original manga/Brotherhood take of the story.
No.

Go with Shaman King instead where true (over) soul resides
I only read original Shaman King and a smidgen of flowers, but I honestly though it was kind of a mess and it really showed that it got axed early when everyone was getting top tier elemental spirits at the drop of a hat. Are the follow ups able to tell stories from beginning to end? I'm kind of surprised a manga that clearly got cancelled managed to get multiple sequel series though.
I'm almost halfway through Golden Wind now, and I have to say, Fighting Gold is definitely in the running for best opening theme for me, about tied with Stand Proud from Part 3's first half.
Fighting Gold goes so damn fucking hard it's insane.
So niggers, is Fairy Tail as bad or cringe as I've heard it to be? I know nothing will ever compare to One Peak for me, but is there anything good about this obvious Break Piece knockoff?
I thought it was shit, again, manga only, but like others have told you, it's pop corn. Something something "power of friendship" and shit explodes. It's incredibly unapologetic with it's fanservice which can be a plus or a minus for you. To me it ended up being detrimental with how blatant it was. Also, once you see a couple of arcs, all arcs are pretty much the same. I do agree with Endless Torment that it didn't forget it's secondary characters though.

Personally, for pure popcorn, and being aware that I read the manga, so no idea if the anime is ass, I find Black Clover more enjoyable than Fairy Tail. It's also full of ass pulls up the whaazoo, but I just had more fun with it. Though it's not finished as of now and the mangaka is going VERY slowly now for what I can only presume is due to health reasons.

Ah, another staple of when I watched a lot more anime than read manga... was awesome. I forget it exists every once in a time only to be reminded that it's still technically being serialized even though it comes out at a worse rate than a Togashi manga. The anime was fire though and it probably would have benefited from just doing it's own thing and giving an ending.

@ShitLurker

Shaman King "sequels" aren't much of sequel in the traditional, they are different perspectives of different characters about the beginning of the flower of maize. Even the timeline would be kind of hard to put to read it since events from a manga x are referenced in manga y.

And it got another sequel to finally start the Flower of Maize, ever since flowers it was all about training and preparation to the FoM.

Are they worth a read considering I read all of the original series and considered it to just be OK?

Gundam 0079 is more similar to Eva; Amuro is basically Shinji with a spine and convictions. Ideon did inspire Eva, but aside from the secret of the Ideon and Be Invoked, they're really not that similar.
Apparently, the main Ideon series is considered to be pretty average. It's the film, Be Invoked, where it becomes a masterpiece.

Don't listen to these naysayers! You absolutely should watch Ideon (the full show); it's a great series on its own merits. I especially like all the space battles and the spaceships; the Solo Ship is really cool (it even has its own biodome and a great Ideon entry system), the Ideon machines act as spaceships on their own, and the Buff Clan ships and robots are really cool too. There are so many great episodes, like when they're chasing the Buff Clan in subspace or when the Solo Ship is trapped underground. People say Ideon has slow pacing and it takes forever for anything to happen, but that's false since there is a battle every episode and the character interactions do progress the story.

As for other things that inspired Eva, watch the Ultra series, Iczer-1, 70s Raideen, Gundam 0079, and Gerry Anderson's UFO. These are the most blatant inspirations I've come across.
