Avowed - Obsidian's new game, like Pillars of Eternity meets Elder Scrolls

The social elements, the writing, the towns and the companions look like a genuine downgrades,
you mean what was supposedly the "strengths" of obsidian
I wonder if OW2 will continue this trajectory or if it will merely remain "mediocre" like the first game
the fact its coming out this year based on the trailer from 3 months ago is odd too. it would have been smarter to space it out a year, and chances are they will, but it seemed to focus more on the combat as well, also the sequel has to be an improvement considering they made the original a lot smaller supposedly so it could be played well on the switch. and now they probably don't have that in mind so its guaranteed to be better. it also has 6 years in production for a game smaller than NV.

also i assume based on OW2 coming out that DLC is off the table for avowed.

The reason why the open world aspect was mostly cut from Outer Worlds was because the team couldn't figure out the technical details behind it, not for the Switch port. There were plans to make all three regions on Terra 2(Emerald Vale, Roseway, Byzantium) for example all accessible on one map in one big open world and this would give player the ability to reach Byzantium early if they were savvy enough, ala skipping half the main quest in New Vegas if you can get past the Cazadores and Deathclaws and make a beeline straight from Goodsprings to New Vegas. Ultimately, the team couldn't run it, so the best we got is Monarch and even then the encounters are glitchy as hell sometimes. This is also supposedly why we have such a low variety of encounters on Monarch, pretty much anything other than "generic bandit" or "pack of creatures" type encounters were off the table. I got multiple crashes from friendly patroling NPCs so you can bet that is one of the reasons why you have static townspeople in Avowed: it seems even moving is giving them trouble, let alone making them interactable within the game's sandbox.

My question is, is it because they're lazy? or they're too scared that additional systems will bug out in unexpected ways?

I'd take a game with a tonne of jank over this sterile flat nonsense any day.
Many programmers are now Indian, many artists are now dangerhair types.

That is all you need to know.

Putting aside the fact that even Bethesda can't work with it anymore, Obsidian unironically should have ditched UE for Creation Engine. I know UE gets shit but I've played games that use it well. If this is the best they can do, they should have rendered unto Todd.

I decided to get the repack of this game as I've been itching to play a fps/rpg for a while.

I think this game is being undeservedly mocked. Here's my impressions after an hour:

  • Simple and straight forward, which focuses the fun on the genre
  • woke-lite (so far)
  • Looks better than most AAA slop that releases nowadays.*
  • Levels very static *
  • Simple-mid skill trees and branches.
  • Dialogue is bog-standard modern-day AAA RPG guff. It's not offensively bad and I believe that's because it has been toned down to be aimed at kids.
  • The whole game makes sense when you consider the target audience is pre-teens.
I would sum this game up as popcorn-flick version of TES games. It's the Michael Bay of RPGs - where bright numbers and colourful spells make it seem like you're a total badarse, even if, below the surface level, it's just press A to win.

Personally, I'm against any woke, even if it's woke-lite, so I didn't, and can't encourage others, to pay for it. If you enjoy this genre, it's worth a play.

*I think having to target Series S console specs is why it runs so well on my rig vs other modern games with zero optimisation, and would explain why object interaction, and enemy AI is set at 0.

Just booted up the xbox for the first time this month, and I'm greeted with this:

Please play the early access of our game!

Played two hours and... I'm having fun?
Strange since I been mocking the game on other threads.
It gets worse. I enjoy some of the fighting like shooting the guns and casting magic. But there's hardly anything in the game worth interacting with. The npcs are static, the character models are hideous, and the way everyone moves is like the world exists on one huge ice hockey table sometimes. There's way too much side lore to this game and I don't even remember what my character was supposed to be doing. The characters are also boring so far, but I have only met a few companions. I have not met the purple furry character yet in all the promo material so I am mentally preparing myself for that.

The target audience is not pre-teens (there would be romance options and sex scenes if that were the case), it's 35-year-olds who played POE and 25-year-olds who want Skyrim 2.

Anyone still comparing this game to TES is a shill trying to maximize the number of people tricked into buying this shit on release. The game looks and plays like a very watered-down Dark Messiah/Dishonored with a gear grind and Bioware hub city + dialogue system.

Honestly the gunplay is fun. Been using pistol + book. I mained Cipher in the previous two games.
I expected Veilguard treatment of the previous two games where they treat them as unnecessary but honestly, they mention a lot of stuff from 1 + 2 in side chats and it makes me happy. They seem to give them respect.
Kai and Marius have been amusing to see squabble.
I'd still 10 times out of 10 rather have a Pillars 3 rather than this but so far it's suitable at best.
Art director is still a niggerfaggot however.

He was originally going to voice the male main character, before voiced protagonists were cut so had a much bigger role in the game at first. Still, being part of Starfield at all is a sign of a failing career so your point stands.
His career isn't failing???

Is there any post they allow on that subreddit that isn't just a fan-made advertisement, announcements for no-name Indie shovelware or some form of "I switched to Xbox after 10 years of playing games on my $2000 PC. Here's my incredibly boring blog post about my thinly veiled buyers remorse"?

How is voicing the protagonist a sign of a failing career? It doesn't matter if it's Starfield, voice actors are paid by the line.
