So Let's break down the Trump non-statement.

Tl;dr: I don't like it, but its a typical non-statement and Russian media isn't jizzing their shorts so I think its a little premature to go full black pill yet. Sounds like he's trying to get Zelensky to engage with the peace process or prove Trumps insults correct.

The constitution of Ukraine states that if a term of the Rada, the federal legislature, expires when martial law is in effect, "its authority is extended until the day of the first meeting of the first session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, elected after the cancellation of martial law (Article 83)." So effectively a new Rada cannot be seated unless it can be elected after martial law expires.

This does not affect presidential elections exactly, but the Rada designates elections for the President (Article 85), so from what I understand the Rada could call for a presidential election at any time but chooses not to do so.

Now while the President does declare martial law (Article 106) with Rada confirmation (85), he did not directly suspend his own election. If the people of Ukraine don't like that elections can be put off that way, they are free to call for the constitution to be amended - though that can't be done during martial law either (157).

Now I don't really like martial law as a concept, but if it must exist I think that having a major chunk of your territory occupied by an active foreign invading military is the type of existential crisis where it might be useful. And if a true peace comes about and martial law is not rescinded and elections planned within a few months, I'll be all on board with calling Zelensky and the Rada power-hungry. But the idea that Ukraine, which as you say later in your post apparently had no hope of winning the war, is currently in a state of normalcy to a point where an orderly election can be held is just not a rational take.

tl;dr: If vatniks are so interested in Ukraine holding elections and replacing their government they should express interest in removing obstacles to simplifying and expediating that process, such as an invading army.
