Avowed - Obsidian's new game, like Pillars of Eternity meets Elder Scrolls

I think it's pretty mid. People are overblowing how bad it is on the whole. For an Obsidian release, it's amazingly polished and well-optimized. It's not the Pillars of Eternity 3D that I wanted, and it's nothing like New Vegas. But it's probably a fine AA action-adventure semi-RPG to play, maybe with the sound off, for a discount price. It really reminds me a lot of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I would not pay $70 for it. I would 100% take it over Veilguard or Starfield, though.

Avowed is not a AAA game, you're right. Full stop, it's not. I don't care who developed it or how much money they spent on it. It feels like an asset flip. The art has the same "feel" that your better asset flips do - that is, everything is "good", on a technical level. But nothing stands out. Nothing has any heart. Nothing feels like a developer cared about a single thing they were doing. Maybe not so much "asset flip" as "assembly line". They tick the boxes, go through the motions, but... At the end of the day it's just a collection of pieces. It lacks the magic to make it come alive. The combat, the sound design, everything. It's going through the motions of a game, without ever really being a game.

Skyrim killer? Not quite. Oblivion killer? MAYBE...then again, how many people bought it on Steam and how many have console copies, old PC discs or just straight up pirated it? These don't show on the charts, uh-oh!
Heh.
I got mine free 'cus of having all the DLC's of the original (plus main, ofc). Thanks Todd.

The big blue guy that they replaced my little blue guy with is already irritating
I want my fuzzy little blue guy back God dammit.
How dare they make him this game’s version of Trask Ulgo from KOTOR 1 except he doesn’t die. I was very annoyed I had to leave him and Not Cait at the dock and take Not Garrus with me.

I couldn’t play any more honestly. I don’t think I even played for 3 hours.
Fallout:New Vegas was like the video game version of Roger Rabbit
Don’t compare what is essentially Fallout 3 DLC with a small number of gameplay improvements to that amazing timeless film.
it was made by the best people in the business
everyone that worked on it was like the best dude from other studios at the time
a true All-Star team
None of these descriptions apply to the developers of New Vegas.

Obsidian has never made a truly great game…Ever.

Old Obsidian made nothing but sequels to already established games, and they tried to make said sequels too ambitious for the time frame they were given so they ended up being some of the most broken buggy games ever made.

New Vegas was legit unplayable at launch on consoles, especially PS3, and even today on PC you have to mod the shit out of the game to make it remotely playable.

KOTOR 2 is the least Star Wars feeling product with that name on it Pre-Disney era. It’s so broken and disjointed that when the game ends you just go “Huh???? That’s it?????”

Now you have New Obsidian that makes the most boring, safe, generic games possible and they don’t even market them properly.
I will give Avowed this, I like that camp mechanic but it’s weird at the same time because that’s the only way you can talk to your companions in the traditional FPS RPG way.
When you walk up to your companion and hit the talk button, they just rattle off some random quip to you instead of brining up the dialogue tree.

Long story short, Obsidian has never been that good. The most overrated game studio ever.

Oblivion has too a water walking spell
Doesn’t Skyrim have water walking potion as well?

So it looks like my initial thoughts about Avowed seemed to be right. It's an ok game worth maybe 10 dollars but not at full price. I'll probably grab it for cheap in a few years. Shame about having to have companions with you at all times. I really hate when games do that type of stuff because there's no guarantee I'll actually like any of them. Judging by what I thought about the ones in the Outer Worlds, I'm probably going to hate them.
Play Unavowed instead
I got to be honest, every time I see this thread part of me reads it as Unavowed and I get kind of excited that people are paying attention to it only to crash back down to reality.

Why do you keep posting a thread about an Obsidian game if you hate the company so much?

Are you serious? Look at most game threads on here. The Fallout thread is filled with much worse. Kingdom Come Deliverance’s thread is nothing but clowning on the devs. Most threads focusing on bad/mediocre/mid games have people making fun of the developers.

The future of Avowed will be exactly how Outer worlds is viewed today
a game made to waste up a spot wherever "free monthly" games are found

in fact I got Outer worlds in one of those "free monthly" game things recently
I now have 4 free copies, all from different services, that's Avowed in a few months.
"""mid""" is just gayer word for Slop

I'm pretty sure Avowed was explicitly made to be Gamepass slop so even meager sales will be seen as "a success."
Just like Slopfield? Oh, I am sure they had big plans for the game, maybe even start a franchise, but that's what it ended up being: A Gamepass rental lmfao

Yup, OW had exactly this kind of middling praise we see now, well the praise was mid-positive not mid-negative but it's similar enough. In a couple weeks time, nobody will remember this game exists. Check out the Outer Worlds wiki and wonder at how barren and incomplete it is to this day, especially the DLC sections. This is the future of Avowed.

Didn't people actually like the murder mystery one? I bombed out after a couple hours and never played either so I could be completely off base.
The few remaining people who gave a shit about the game after 2 years(which is how long it took for this DLC to be made), sure. Peril on Gorgon(made only a year after the game came out, ala Shattered Steel for Starfield) is the more commonly liked DLC, with some even admitting it's on the same level as New Vegas DLCs.
