Double posting because i can't add this on mobile. sorry everyone.
might as well fold that into the Real ID.
Honestly they should, then they can use our passport number instead of our SSN for everything. Or just give us all a national id number like other nations have.
Hence the solution... Tarrifs!
You could tarrif the Chinese light bulbs until they are uncompetitive with US manufactured ones.
Or you could collect tarrifs and use those funds to build highly automated and efficient US factories that are lower price and better quality than the Chinese slop.
Tarrifs don't always work because countries will just build the product 99% in one place, and then 1% in a country that isn't getting tarrifs. you need legislation to combat this but that requires Congress to actually do something.
Blocking China and Chinese nationals from owning US land is something Trump has said he might fix. I hope he does.
I agree but it should be all foreigners. If you don't have at least a green card you can't buy.
Trump keeps talking about reciprocal and fair deals. The MAGA political party will hopefully continue that line of logic.
a) Monopolies are either "natural" or "unnatural". Natural require government caretaking (state ownership, or heavily regulated). Unnatural I would prefer not exist. Unnatural exist from criminal collusion or artificial barriers (like regulatory capture).
If the feds actually cared they would have broken up google, apple and Microsoft long ago. The banks too but that's a different story.
b) Agree. I would go further.
c) Tariffs fix corporations shipping jobs and factories overseas.
It can or it could force manufacturers to other nations.
Enforcing existing illegal labor laws fixes domestic.
We need to go after the corporations and people who hire illegals. It should be a major crime to knowingly hire illegals.
Trusting Soviet era propaganda, sure.
China’s first tech accomplishment was The Great Firewall, preventing its internal citizens from interacting with the rest of the world. I’ll trust leaked video from China more than a state funded “influencer”
I'm just saying to be critical of them too. For example China is attempting to stop corruption but it's because internally the CCP fears it can lead to greater unrest. Does that mean corruption is stamped out? Fuck no, it just means lower level corruption is less common. So cops will stop directly asking you for cash bribes but if you want to get some project done you still need to "grease some wheels." The CCP lives and dies on the message that only they can make china the middle kingdom again. And only they will uplift everyone (as opposed to those dirty capitalists who only uplift the rich etc etc). As such the CCP has to ensure that at least on paper to the average Chinese citizen things are getting better. China is too large and has too many people to force a North Korea style government on everyone but they can placate their people with flashy toys and simple life upgrades. The issue is that the system is extremely delicate, like China*badum tish*. So any upset has the possibility of collapsing it.
When China established it's Zero covid policy it was so restrictive that protests broke out, and if you're an authoritarian state those protests can easily snowball. So it's best to prevent protests as much as possible and you do that by controlling information and preventing large scale dessent from forming.
