He thought he was going to get a spot in the Trump administration with the other former Democrats. He got so much good press for that. Instead, he ended up defending healthcare company bribes, and sinking even lower than before. He knows he fucked his own career and is stuck on the losing side.

Reminds me of something someone said earlier, about how during the hearing they are all part of these special interest groups but when asked they claim they will be completely neutral.
