I have no interest in litigating Mormonism, but this is not an apt comparison.

Joseph Smith claimed to be receiving divine revelation directly from God. That's much more pressing, because it speaks to an ultimate truth about reality. If he was telling the truth, he should be revered, and if he wasn't, no one should listen to him on anything, and should spit on his name.

George Washington was a political figure, you can have all the respect in the world for him, but in the end his authority is purely secular and has only the authority you choose to give it.
