Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

Some automakers have put physical HVAC controls on their lower trims of some cars, but replace them with either on-screen controls, capacitive touch controls, or other less convenient methods on their higher trims. Here's 3 examples:

Kia K4, which replaces a line of HVAC buttons with fewer HVAC buttons and a 5 in. HVAC controls screen between the driver cluster and infotainment screen:

Nissan Kicks, which replaces their physical HVAC controls and knobs with capacitive touch controls:

Ford Escape, which replaces HVAC controls by adding them to the larger screen on the higher-trims:

Since i have to go back in the office, my wife is wanting me to trade my Corolla that has 270k miles for something newer. Been looking but all i see are cars with these ridiculous infotainment systems. And i hate the proprietary ones that you see in alot of cars. If it has car play and physical nobs, that’s find. But I don’t want everything to be controlled by a screen.

It's autistic of me to say this, but less about the tech, and more about the aesthetics of the casing.

All the round, bubble shaped stuff, translucent and came in different colors.

On a different note, it also took me forever to find a smartphone with an actual headphone jack.

I sorta forgot about that for my latest chinesium phone, tbh I don't really mind that much, it's come up maybe once and even then I had a laptop I could pull the same signal from that still had a 1/8th

unrelated Work put win11 on my machine, and I clicked on volume mixer option from the sound icon and it gave me some horrible damned modern windows settings box and not The Windows Volume Mixer :heart-empty:
fortunately I'm autistic enough to previously pin The Windows Volume Mixer executable to my taskbar already years ago so it's still there:heart-full:

Sir, that's a poor spec Golf MK4. Here's the proper one, apologies for RHD photo:

Steering wheel buttons, I loved mine, minimal controls. Radio and cruise control buttons.
As for the climate controls, climatronic unit, I liked 3 dial manual climate control honestly, very simple and after some time you'd know where to set the dial intuitively.

I honestly prefer the poor spec, especially for the lack of steering wheel buttons. You can swap it to the 3 spoke wheel easier, as you don't have to worry about as many wires.

Also not specific to the base model but without a physical speedo you can't do this

I really hate how Windows 11 will not save my disabled audio outputs. Windows is obnoxious enough with sounds from Teams and system that it drives me nuts when i reboot my machine and hear a million teams and system sounds. The change sucks and absolutely loathe the new taskbar.

Who’s the fucking project manager at M$ that felt it needed ro change?

Just the interior alone is a direct downgrade for creature comforts and ease of use, without even going into the mechanical aspect of parts being swapped to plastic vs steel or aluminium like the oill pan or valve covers and if im not mistaken even the thermastat (very bad idea if you aren't too familiar with working on cars) most people just buy an aftermarket aluminium one after the OEM plastic rots and or cracks.
You have to replace half the engine every time you do something.
Plastic becomes so brittle you can't do any repairs without damaging something else.

Electric cars are even worse offenders.
You change driving style to eco or eco+ and your climate controls change as well. Why the f does adjusting pedal acceleration have to mess with ventilation.
The worst is when there are 2 buttons for fan speed up or down and another button to roll thru the positions of where it blows. You have to press it, check to what it changes and press again if you are not happy with it.
Radio volume button on screen is so annoying that I just drive without.
It silencing down when you are in "first gear", reversing, turning or breaking is a nice touch tho.

Absolutely bad car design. Nothing really makes me thrilled to buy a newer car. And my wife’s KIA didn’t come with a spare tire but instead, came with a shitty pump that will inflate your tire.

Has anyone already mentioned power doors?

No reason for them. They don't make things easier, they make the door even more difficult to use if it breaks down...
All the power doors i’ve seen are on minivans. And they have always been slow as shit when they open and shut. When i drop my kids off at school, there’s always that one person who slows down the line because of their slow ass powerdoors.

Any recommendations for an iPod clone?
Just get yourself a modded iPod classic. They can accept up to 2tb of storage and a much better battery than the original ones. You can do it yourself if you’re handy, or buy one from people who do it for you:

You don’t have to use iTunes to put music on them either. There are iTunes alternatives like CopyTrans or MediaMonkey that you can use to put your mp3s on there.

i picked up one last year, not big storage, but enough for like 10-15albums? end of it comes off and its a usb so just plug it in and transfer. The main feature for me was it takes an AA battery.
mines an old sony one, but they make new versions (shengzen rebadged units)1742170026981.jpeg

never thought I would yearn for 2005 tech, but here we are

BlackBerry 10. It had an Android emulation layer and was one of the first mobile OSes (if not the very first) to embrace touch gestures. I also just like physical keyboards. The UniHertz chinkphones just aren't the same, plus they're all running old versions of Android. I'd use a Classic if it still worked on modern cell towers (despite being 4G, it's some older implementation of VoLTE)

$300+ for a refurbished iPod? No, thanks. It seems easier to install Rockbox on an old one and use that.

Way cheaper to just buy a used iPod Classic, buy the parts yourself and do it. It's actually quite easy to do the flash storage mod and the battery replacement.

Really the hardest part of the whole process is getting the back cover off. Once you're in, it's easy.
