Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Will you accept a release of the remaster’s source code? Because that happened two months ago.
Nah, when it comes to EA and CNC the only thing I'll accept is the OpenRA devs being given a bigger budget and official endorsement, probably rights to remaster red alert 2. The remaster is ass, inflated filesizes, little to no gameplay improvements, texturework imported to a Malaysian sweatshop, whatever else. OpenRA is near perfect with filesize compatibility gameplay everything, those guys are like much smarter versions of the people working at nightdive. They're currently remastering tiberian sun I think.

Dude, if you're just playing arcade games, then just download FightCade 2 and get the json rom downloader. It's so simple and convenient.

Just go FPGA, it's so much easier. In just another 12 months I'll have mine working.

lol, several months ago I updated all my cores and all my fucking arcade games stopped working. I got lucky and a few of them still ran but not all of them. Today I tried adding some more from multiple updated sets that match the latest FBN (1.0.0.3) and it still pulled up that message every fucking time. I deleted that fucking piece of shit and tried MAME current instead, and since it's easier to find games that are already set for the latest version, I got it working without much hassle. Except for the fact that newer games that ran fine on FBN were lagging like fuck on MAME. Unfortunately the only "solution" you will find is faggitors telling you to get FBN which I just deleted because, as I mentioned, it's a fucking piece of shit. And no, there doesn't appear to be any way to rollback core updates without already having a backup nor do they provide downloads for old versions of cores. They just fuck you in the ass with the newer updates and leave you in the dirt like every other fucking gaming anything does now. If you don't back them up and the newer core breaks something, you're fucked.

Everywhere I look online is some faggitor saying "DUHHH YOU HAVE TO DO ROCKET SCIENCE AND REBUILD THE ROM SETS WITH A TOOL YOU HAVE TO BUILD WITH VIRTUAL BASIC TRANNY PROGRAMMING SOCKS EDITION" fuck that shit, nigger. I never had to do this shit before and it's only arcade games that are like this, I never have to update console games. It's only because these faggots at MAME and FBN for some absolutely retarded reason decided updating the emulator = breaking all your roms. BULLSHIT. I will not go through unnecessary extra bullshit because some faggot tranny developer wants me to. Fuck that. I guess I'll be enjoying 80s arcade games for a while since those are the only ones that don't lag. I update my cores every few months because sometimes some emulators do get improved, but I suppose I'll have to completely avoid doing so now

I don't do emulators anymore but I never understood the point of updating unless something was broken while im playing. SNES9X from 15 years ago was perfectly fine.
It makes no sense for emulators that are more or less established such as SNES9X (even then some games can benefit from the improved compatability), but for emulators like PCSX2, its absolutely necessary as hardware emulation is only really perfect with a handful of games.

Also is there a website for finding FPGA parts? I was planning on building a MisTer somewhat soon.

There's a bunch. In the US I like "MiSTer Addons"

Basically a MiSTer is just: an FPGA board(DE10-Nano. Mister Pi or similar), a stick(or 2) of RAM, an I/O board(not 100% needed but has some quality of life improvements like lights and buttons), and a USB hub. And probably a case. The MisterPi is just a different DE-10 Nano board at a lower price point, but often out of stock, then add the same accessories. I think the official place for that is RetroRemake dot co.

Alright on the topic of RetroArch, I've found it only really exceeds with emulators without any GUI as you don't have to fuck about with a terminal in order to fucking play video games. Everything else past Dreamcast is an absolute chore to play on compared to standalone launchers like PCSX2 and Dolphin, then you have the weird fucking thing where they don't allow certain emulators like Xenia and the PS3 emulator. By chore I mean it's messy as hell to configure Dolphin in RetroArch (on a game by game basis) than just having the standalone emulator right there. For all the flashy options they have you can't just go to a core and edit the options in RetroArch without finding the config file and tweaking it with notepad (I'll admit I might be retarded and missed a very clear option but I can't seem to figure it out).

However, and a big however, if you don't really care about enhancements and literally just playing games as they played on your old console then it's fairly good to just shove the entire GB/GBC/GBA/Mega Drive/NES/SNES/PS1/N64 library in a roms folder and boom, you've got a fairly decent emulation box that you can run off any shitty PC you have lying around or as a folder on your gaming rig. As a bonus, as those old emulators are so old and not really progressing anytime soon the RetroArch GUI is significantly snappier and just better in general to switch games on the fly.

It also has the ability to load it in portable mode, which I do because I figure in 10 years time I'll be able to just drop the entire folder in another PC and it'll save a billion manual saves I've made over the years without any fucking around.

Anyone know where I can track down the latest product/title key files for Switch? I downloaded XBX and the emulator Citron because it apparently runs it the best right now, but I've been out of the Switch emulation game so long I dunno what sites are trustworthy anymore.

They don’t “allow” certain emulators because no one has ported them. Cores don’t just come into existence on their own, someone has to make them, and more advanced emulators required more specialized hardware/architecture are going to be more difficult to adapt to something as platform-agnostic as LibRetro.
By chore I mean it's messy as hell to configure Dolphin in RetroArch (on a game by game basis) than just having the standalone emulator right there.
Case in point: the Dolphin core used to at least be close to standalone, but standalone got a lot of updates, and for whatever reason the core just got left behind. But some others like MelonDS DS are specifically designed to work upstream from the original.

It’s literally called Core Options in the default quick menu, come on man.

Searched this thread for someone to mention Terranigma but surprised no one has. Pretty great SNES game. Just finished it today, has some jank here and there but overall was a pretty great gem that didn't get released in burgerland. If you haven't checked it out and like Illusion of Gaia and action RPGs check it out, it is made by the same people as their last game. Not too long of a game but it's got it's cryptic shit at times. I don't know if there is a balance hack but it would benefit greatly as it becomes too easy to over level or be under leveled if you speed through it. Soundtrack is a fucking banger though. Hope you frens enjoy.

It depends on the console and the library. Dolphin despite being the primo best emulator for gamecube and wii for like 15 years at this point, still doesnt have compatibility for everything. They added compatibility for castlevania chronicles in 2022 I think in one of the dev versions. The last official release of dolphin was in 2015 and is compatible with 90% of the Wii and gamecube library. So reason 1 for updates - compatibility

Reason 2 - Improvements. PCSX2 can run mgs3 from start to finish with no issues, near perfectly and was able to do so since I think version 1.2.0. Despite that it still can't render the light textures in dremuchij properly and has framerate/rendering/sound issues during the chase sequences, some of which were only recently changed in 1.6.0 I think over a year ago (the most recent version probably is much better at those). Project64 has introduced new methods of rendering to improve the framerates, new texture mapping capability, new plugin support and stuff I think as of 21 22, it's another emulator which has been functional since 2005 but still nice to have. Mames rom and compatibility list expands with each release with minor texture and sound improvements. Etc etc etc I think you get the picture. This doesn't apply that much to things like mesen and snes9x which are practically abandoned at this point, old console emulators in general don't require fine tuning beyond limits (bsnes does have minor improvements like hd mode 7, hd textures, there will probably be cycle speed and widescreen at original aspect ratio enhancements in the future once those dedicated projects are done) but it's nice to have emulator updates which give us nice stuff.

If you just want a functional game then no problem, play with old versions. For newer consoles generally it's going to be a bit of the hassle to get everything running just right, cemu still isn't perfect for the vast majority of wii u games without third party enhancements.

Has anyone here played Wasteland? As a fan of the Fallout series, I plan on playing it.
Its alright if you like dungeon crawlers, from older stuff I played with SMT games, it scratched that "fuck everything up and explore" itch , just don't expect the story or setting to be as interesting as the first 2 fallouts.

if the idea of making a small group of retards together, and being dropped into a open world and being told by the game "go be a problem" appeals to you,
you'll have an alright time.

One other thing about RA I forgot to mention that’s often overlooked despite being one of the main selling points: its platform-agnostic-ness makes it easy to port large amounts of things at once. When a new device/chip/etc is released, all someone has to do is port RetroArch itself and the new thing can suddenly emulate a ton of systems without each one needing to be ported individually.

There are some individual games that have gotten cores, and it makes them way more accessible. Super Mario War’s core not only makes that game playable on far more devices, it quickly became the definitive way to play it on systems that already had a standalone version due to things like performance improvements. Cave Story (or at least the vanilla version) was the same way due to nx-engine’s core, but the much better Doukutsu-rs just got a core that’s already appearing on more devices.
The last official release of dolphin was in 2015
Last year, they reworked their release system to have stable releases every few months, with the most recent being just last week. Even ignoring that, Dolphin has always had such a rigorous code review process that even the frequent “beta” releases were considered stable in everything but name; enough so that the current downloads page retroactively refers to them as stable.
