She is very stupid but given how she was raised I would say she’s fairly numb to violence, traumatizing events, abuse, degradation, upheaval, chaos, etc…

She had a schizophrenic father, and mother so dumb that hanging on to batshit husband because he gets V.A. assistance and welfare gibs is her best survival strategy. This ensured Tophia grew up in absolute constant chaotic, abusive, violent mayhem. Public housing, homeless shelters, homelessness, foster care, etc… I’d bet good money Tophia was sexually abused by her father, and lots of other randos, maybe even her own brother, as a kid.

The Slydells didn’t seem that bothered by living in cars and that tells me it certainly wasn’t the first time they’ve done it. They have cockroach survival strategies.

I’m sure, if she hadn’t blocked it out, Tophia could tell brutal stories about her childhood. She learned to live in the moment to survive. Being incredibly stupid is helpful because it means she doesn’t think too deeply and is easily distracted. OTOH this also why she has little ability to plan, prepare or strategize for the future. It’s a double edged sword.

All this is to say that Tophia would have become very numb to almost any and everything in order to survive. Being emotionally shallow is helpful for a brutal existence. Even witnessing her only sibling’s brains getting blown out can only dent that shell. I don’t think she has much of an emotional spectrum because she can’t afford too. If she was sensitive or emotional she would have offed herself long ago and never shown her mug on TT to grift.
