Stepparents are odd creatures of habit and nepotistic trickery.

Best advice: don't believe a damn word they tell you about being their own kid or whatever. If they're consistent and are there for you without there being something they're getting in return (you know what they care about you or something) then you got the real deal.

I feel for Cole as well. It's like with anything in life though; get to know their political and religious affiliations before you call them Daddy or Mommy.

I don't think Cole ever really liked Chris that much. I believe he only tolerated him for a time. Mainly because Cole was just taking what he could get in terms of family.

To be a little fair to Chris, Cole was the older brother and being a little invested in his younger brother's life wouldn't have killed him.

I respect his decision not to because of how bad Barb and Bob were, but using your help as a bartering tool towards your younger disabled brother just to get information about your father was kind of low.

I mean I get it that's the way some siblings are but again, I don't really see anything Cole ever did that was anything approaching positive in Chris's life.

Nothing against Cole of course but I can understand where Chris would be a little resentful of his brothers less than valuable presence in his vulnerable life... Considering Cole should have known what it was like growing up with Barb.

I've always wondered what exactly the plan was for Chris after they both died, and it seems like Bob's just wanting to shift the burden. Yeah, well that was obviously not going to happen. He more or less gave up on it. And Blarb in general were obviously completely delusional about their idea that if they let Chris get any kind of autism education (which was and still is dismal but beats nothing) would end up in him being institutionalized for life or something.

As it is, they set him up for being Barb's prisoner for life, or at least until he realized he could beat her up, rape her, whatever, and then he actually did end up for a time an actual inmate.

That transcript is a fascinating read. It makes me wonder how it was all set up. Did that Assassin guy just call the house and strike up a conversation with Bob? Seeing as his only other options for people to talk to were Barb and Chris, I could see Bob eagerly talking to just about anybody, but it's still surprising to see him open up about such personal matters to a stranger.

And it's interesting to see all of Bob's denial about Chris' condition. He kept throwing things out there, just hoping that they might become true -- and making excuses for Chris when things don't work. He can be just as delusional as Chris.

Oh, and the closed captioning thing? It's because Bob and Barb didn't read to Chris! No one knows less about raising children than I do, and even I know that you're supposed to read to them! Sit down and show them picture books; do the voices of the characters if you want to; eventually the kid will start following along with the written words. The closest Chris had to someone reading to him was a TV on unattended. That's neglectful even when dealing with a neurotypical child and downright shameful for one with autism. And to think that Bob was proud of that!

No - Cole left home for California at the age of 17 in 1980, two years before Chris was born. Bob had been dating Barb for less than a year at this point and 14 Branchland hadn't even been purchased by the Chandlers yet.
Cole appears to have had little presence in Chris's life aside from the occasional postcard; perusing the CWCki it seems that the only in-person meetings between the two were for Cole's 26th birthday (in 1989, when Chris was 7) and for Chris's 18th (in 2000, when Cole was around 37). Given the extreme age difference between the two (Cole was in his late 30's when Chris turned 1 and Cole's complicated relationship with Barb and Bob, this estrangement isn't surprising.

While it's understandable everyone wants to feel special, the real world will beat that golden child mentality out of you most of the time.

I believe there's a place in the Cwiki - probably on the ego page - where it says well most kids grow out of feeling like the world revolves around them, Chris with his parents enabling and his autistic, narrow view of the world will never grow out of that.

Chris 100% is the result of bad upbringing due to his parents trying to mainstream the 'tism out of their spawn. Almost everything that ties to Chris being the original arch lolcow stems from being unable to handle how his Autism made him unable to understand the viewpoints of literally anybody other than himself. Hell, he knew from an early age that him being Autistic was the reason why his parents spoiled him, so why shouldn't the rest of the world treat him the same way?
