You are not a part of this, your interference hurts both sides and thus it is banned. It probably will not be charged with this as the punishment is deportation but it will be used as further reasoning for a harsher sentence.

He's been on about the US embassy for a bit, so I'd ASSUME at very least hes contacted the embassy and gotten radio silence in response. Doubt they would give a formal "fuck you kill yourself" letter in response, but I could totally see him emailing, calling, knocking at the embassy and being constantly ignored?
But like, if we could get a scan of the actual real letter, it would be fantastic to laugh at.

Believable. He is not some athlete jailed for pot at an enemy nation. The embassy was probably contacted by the courts about Smally so they might have already told them that they are to do whatever they want with him.

Travis was the exception, not the rule. The Norks had every reason to suspect and interrogate him. Did he catch them in giving mood, were they not having secret weapons tests that period, who knows? Important thing is that if Smally tries something like that, not only will he not have much knowledge of mine placement, he might be shredded by the new weapons that have been added as well. And considering the increased tensions between the Koreas, the combat experience the Norks received in Ukraine, the local generals need to prove themselves and the fact that the soldiers he might run into might have trigger-happy fingers, Smally might be safer in a S. K. prison after all. It is not like he can escape N. K. and blend in with the population.
They can do anything from actually providing counsel (actually generally just giving you a list of locals), directly intervening and trying to get the charges dropped or reduced (and again they will not OVERTLY do this), or more often, simply giving advice and maybe keeping track of the situation.
You're generally entitled to "consular assistance" which means at least contact with State personnel. You're not entitled to them actually doing anything effective, though. They do sometimes intervene when some crime that's really minor here is really severely punished there, and for things like the Michael Fay caning (they shouldn't have imo), death penalties for minor drug offenses, etc. (though if you're dealing you're pretty much on your own).
