I was under the impression this was something that can be mandated by the court, but I guess it is true that if slander is found they can't order Karl to issue a formal and public apology to Billy and retract his statement -- Karl needed to do this beforehand. I can see that the judgement being so sizable is simply to convince the public Karl is wrong.

Billy Mitchell didn't "drop" most suits, they were settled, like 95% of civil cases.

The U.S. courts - and I assume Australian, too - aggressively encourage settlements. Settlements save the courts millions of dollars in trial costs, save the plaintiffs and defendants millions of dollars in attorney costs, and save everybody thousands of hours of time. In my state, if you're involved in civil court, everybody in the court system, at every step of the way, will be demanding that both sides make every good faith effort to reach a settlement. You'll have to sign tons of forms with clerks saying that you've tried to reach a settlement. You'll have to talk to the judge and explain how in the hell you haven't reached a settlement, etc.

Karl Jobst was caught dead-to-rights, was encouraged to settle by the court and, most likely, his own attorneys, and only offered what the judge deemed to be an absurd, bad faith settlement offer.

My rough estimate would be that jobs owes Billy about$700,000 in court fees and Lawyers bills

Keep in mind that in Australia, you hire an even more expensive specialist to argue for you in court. A barrister (the fags with the wigs) will cost $300-500 an hour. Or up to $1000 an hour if they have QC/KC next to their name.

That's on top of what you're already paying your solicitors. It makes having a trial on purpose even more retarded than doing so in the US.

Queensland guidelines state that Karl's lawyers had to warn him just how much it might cost him if he lost. And he chose to humiliate himself to the entire world anyway.
