IIRC Karl removed himself as a beneficiary from that GoFundMe to avoid a conflict of interest.
I hope for him that he stuck to that and did not take a single Dollar from it, but it would be nice for him to publish the financials and prove it.

The second GoFundMe was started when the lawsuit against Karl was already filed and Karl new exactly what it was about and mislead the public about it.
I was still under the impression that it had been at one point in time ALSO about cheating allegations. I am currently reading through stuff to try and find the source of that misconception. I bet I find it somewhere in the Karl & Friends narratives.

Lawyers can work for free, and big name firms will often offer some pro bono work for corporate PR. It also sometimes happens for ideological reasons; murderer Adrian Bayley had pro bono assistance for his case against Legal Aid for their refusal to grant him aid for his appeal.

You can also have no win, no fee arrangements, but the lawyers can only claim for hours worked, not a percentage (which of course could be significantly more), so there is no real incentive for the lawyer to take on the risk.

Litigation funders (ie investors who front the money for a percentage of the judgement) are allowed (at least in Vic) but as far as I'm aware, are really only a thing in the big pay day space of class actions. Australia has limits on general damages in most jurisdictions, so we don't have the huge individual payouts you see in the states.

So basically if Karl can't pay for it himself, and almost certainly in advance, an appeal isn't happening.
