Just being thunkful here, but I'm thinking of an angle Trump could take to soften Ottawa's control over the West and also gain a political advantage back at home. That is to say: make a one-time offer of US citizenship to Canadian citizens residing in Alberta and Saskatchewan, regardless of whether they have imminent plans to move to the USA. As in, "hey, you, Albertan, drive down to the border and we'll slap a fucking passport into your hands, you're welcome".

Sounds insane, right? Utter madness? On the face of it, perhaps. But consider the following. Those taking up the offer of citizenship in the current climate would overwhelmingly self-select for the right wing. Zero worries of suddenly getting a new batch of Democrats. Those who do relocate across the border would be a net plus for the Republican Party. And even if there isn't an exodus? The US now has a large number of dual-citizens living in AB and SK, further increasing soft political reach in those regions.

This would actually make more sense than trying to outright annex the two provinces, since the support simply isn't there. At least, not in the short term. Even among Alberta separatists, most are in favour of independence rather than statehood. And separatists of any stripe have, IMO, at best a rock hard ceiling of 40% support and would be extremely unlikely to win a referendum.
