At this rate the game will be aborted before it comes out, much like Sega's Hyenas or Amazon's Crucible.
If they had any sense, that's what they'd do. Rework the whole thing as a single-player game with PVP modes like old-school Halo. Just take advantage of the aesthetic and lore, build a game around it. Make the concept of expendable shells part of the story, since something fucked up was happening on the colony.
But they've dug themselves into a hole they can't climb out from. Neither Bungie nor Sony will back out from this, they've sunk too much into it. Hubris and toxic positivity have blinded them to what was obvious to everyone else, and now that they're getting a dose of reality, they can't back out.
This is a hell of their own making. They could've tried something, at least give out more codes to try and drum up some numbers, since even with early negative signs there were plenty of people willing to try it. But no, they remained paralysed, seemingly unable to make a single significant decision. The alpha is almost over, and they let it slowly decline. With it, the rot has set in and public perception has gone from undecided to generally negative, except for the last holdouts of faggitors and cultists huffing copium like it's galaxy gas.
With Destiny dead as far as growth is concerned, and even major issues getting old players back, Bungie is in serious trouble. I think this time they're actually fucked. They've run out of exit strategies, it's do or die. I know it's still unlikely, but the way this whole alpha played out makes the rumors of the board and higher ups jumping ship as soon as they get the chance a lot more believable in my eyes.
