Borderlands (1, 2, 3, The Pre-Sequel, TftB)

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I finished the main story in B3 last night, almost done the Hammerlock Faggotry DLC, kinda wishing there was more DLC, since I cleared the Halloween and Cartel event stuff too. I might go back and finish Tales, but it didn't really grab me.

I might hold my nose and go back to Pre-Sequel, since it is the only one I haven't finished yet, but that game's gameplay is not good enough to overcome the writing.

Currently playing BL3 myself too, on TVHM with speedy Zane. BL3, due to the gameplay and graphics, makes it by far the best Borderlands game out right now imo, in spite of the milquetoast storyline. I say this as someone who started off with BL2, and have multiple characters that are OP8 and above.

I find that the gameplay is a lot better in BL3. The sliding and ledge climbing makes movement in the game much more enjoyable. The graphics in this game are also several steps above BL2 in terms of quality, from the scenic environments to the enemy designs. Meridian Metroplex takes the cake for me in terms of overall quality and atmosphere; it was BL3's version of Bloodshot Ramparts.

A lot of people criticize the story, specifically honing in on Maya's premature death (which I do agree, was done too early), and Ava's "annoying" personality. Imo, Ava isn't that bad. She's a decent character with some nice one-liners and a lot of potential that the writers for BL4 can work with. She also has some pretty good voice acting as well.

Overall, Ava was okay, and speaking of the story as a whole, it was very solid, which puts it at a close 2nd compared to BL2. I won't go into too much detail, but there were many parallels between BL2's story structure and BL3's. For example, both games had a "city-under-siege" segment (BL2 with Ramparts and BL3 with the Metroplex), an "important-character-dying" segment (Maya and Roland), CEO antagonists (Jack and Katagawa, who is a softer version of the first), trips to gloomy Eridian places in the last quarter of the story (Eridium Blight and Nekrotafeyo), and many other things.

Overall, despite the problems that commentators and fans of the previous titles often complain about, BL3 is a breath of fresh air, at least to me. I hope BL4 will have all upsides that BL3 has, preferably with a better story, and from what I've seen so far, BL4 has a lot of promise.

I'd like BL3 if the game let me play it. Tried playing through it with a buddy and there are no fucking enemies. Anywhere. We were doing long walks through fucking completely deserted cities on our way to the next 40 minute "comedy" setpiece where we'd get blabbed at by characters, unable to do anything until they were done talking about a story neither of us gave even a single shit about.

During the 20-30 second sequences where the game would finally spawn 3-4 enemies we would immediately mulch them and then it was back to walking or listening. Fuck Borderlands 3. Even the Pre-Sequel got the "dungeons full of enemies" shit right.

I think one of the main reasons Roland was killed off was because he was for the most part a straight man style character and even back then Gearbox wanted the direction to be quirky manic unfunny faggots who never shut up.

Uninstall and reinstall the game, that should fix that issue. Or crank up the difficulty.

I'm somewhere in the middle of BL3 myself currently and enjoying it. Wish more randoms played it online because it does feel very lonely unless I have a podcast in the background. Level 23 Moze and I have the twin Nukes which like some others mentioned do kind of reduce the game into a loop of scoring kills to get my mech back, then annihilating everything I can see. Thinking of swapping one out and going down the flamer route.

Man pre-sequel is such shit. Why yes I love backtracking! PLEASE SEND ME TO GET ANOTHER MCGUFFIN TO CROSS THIS FUCKING BRIDGE SO IT DOESNT OPEN AGAIN!
I have this same issue in BL2 as well. I grew up playing all the games but trying to revisit them after playing BL3 I just can't deal with the backtracking. That and the clunky gunplay.

That's not really unpopular. Most people seem to agree the gameplay is the best in the series while the story/writing is an abomination.

One of the only things I didn't like about the gameplay is the rate they spam legendaries at you to the point where they pretty much mean nothing, which shockingly it sounds like they're fixing for 4.
I agree the story is not as enjoyable as BL2, but I've never played Borderlands for the story so it didn't really stop me from playing it. If you want a poignant story driven game go play Life is Strange or something. Gameplay and gunplay above all, and BL3 is the best of the series in both. It's not up for debate.

Agreed on the legendary thing. Worth noting though the legendaries that spam drop are only world drops, and most world drop legendaries are terrible with mayhem scaling. The good weapons are almost all locked behind dedicated boss drops and those drop chances are not increased on higher mayhem levels, so under the guise of the legendary spam the endgame grind is actually pretty rewarding (and also painful lol)

Well, good luck to him. I largely attribute Doom The Dark Ages underperforming and only getting a third of Eternal's peak concurrent players to the $70 price tag and Doom is a much better series than fucking Borderlands.
Counterpoint: Goated oblivion remaster at $50, people still ree'd at the price.

I'd play Tina's if it didnt run like fucking shit. both 2 and 3 runs better?

I have The Handsome Collection on PC and it runs fine, no idea about BL3 since I played that shit on PS4.

Doom Dark Ages costs 10 dollars.

They can price it at whatever they want, but I'll still wait for a complete edition for $20 or less before I buy it.

Especially after Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Gearbox doesn't deserve full price for anything. And I say that after paying $9 for the complete version of that!

That's insanity, even as someone who's a big fan of the franchise. I checked out Borderlands 4, and it's essentially just "Borderlands 3.5" in terms of gameplay and graphics. That doesn't mean I hate the game, it just means that charging $80 for something that is essentially the same as the previous is absurd.

That said, I'd like to take the opportunity to discuss BL4 a little more in depth.

Speaking of the 4 Vault Hunters, a lot of people say they're generic design-wise, but i'd say that, two of them are good, including Rafa (brown nose ring guy) and Amon (buff guy), and one of them is excellent, with that character being Vex the Siren, and also the character I'm most excited about overall.

Harlowe (black "leftist" girl) is the character I think is the most out of place, and a lot of people are in agreement with this.

In fact, I came across a post on Reddit that said a lot of characters in the Borderlands franchise are "barista-coded", and I would say that's correct, and that this character is the very embodiment of that.

The only things that make up for the lackluster design of Harlowe is her background as a Maliwan researcher, which I think will play a big role in her combat capabilities and gameplay.

Overall, BL4 still has a lot of promise in my eyes, but there are clearly some flaws that need to be addressed, and multiple flaws from the previous game that shouldn't resurface.

What can they really do graphics wise at this point considering if they wanted to advance the graphics further they would have to change the art style completely and they already removed a lot of the heavier shading from the older games starting in BL3.
Gameplay wise I'm fine with them simply improving the systems of 3 and I am curious if they are telling the truth about how they make each skill tree and each sub skill tree completely different play style as that would be cool. Curious about how the more Destiny approach to the open world, heavy weapon system, and grappling hook will play out. One thing I am glad about is now bosses can be reset by a button instead of save quitting because now you can grind with friends, because no one wants to make a new party after every boss fight.

Clearly even Gearbox were aware that no one liked the designs because for their newest presentation and new the trailer they showed off different colors and outfits. They gave Rafa who looked liked a random NPC a robotic helmet so he didn't look boring as fuck, gave Amon a different color scheme, and let just gave Harlowe a visor.
The default outfits that showed off for the 4 new vault hunters were fucking boring as fuck and various plot critical characters they shown had far superior designs.

Even if I'm more optimistic towards BL4 than I was initially I just don't think it is worth $80, but at the same time I don't think any game is really worth $80 either.
