Every other scandal, Ian's at least looked like a victim. You could call him pathetic and weak, but it invoked pathos rather than anger. It came off like he was just trying to live by his own morals and do right by the people he cared about, even if it was in a really cringe and embarrassing way.

This scandal was different because now he's the aggressor. He's the snake who backstabbed his friend and put all their shit out there, he's the guy who faked being nice while shitting on someone he spent years being a friend to. Now he's not sympathetic, he's just -pathetic. The only redeeming quality he had was pity. Part of me wonders if he knew how pitiful he came off and was trying to use that to get an advantage. It feels like everyone adopted the "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" mantra from the Dead Kennedys while barely paying attention to the lyrics of Holiday in Cambodia, which called out the left wing grifters who couldn't give less of a fuck about foreing conflicts using them for financial gain or to virtue signal (sounds familiar?). Punk, like leftism, became anchored to identity politics, virtue signaling and moral grandstanding, meanwhile the actual politics behind it all got handwaved away with shallow lip service. It became a lot more about groupthink rather than advocating for actual change. It's really no wonder why, of all the genres of music they could be presenting themselves as huge fans of, it's this one.
