Let's Sperg Marathon 2025 - Bungie's new AAAA Extraction shooter

tortanic had hype, which made it's implosion the spectacle it was.
marathon is a wet fart in comparison most people won't remember months after release.
Both were skinwalking a beloved franchise, but at least the idea of a KOTOR MMO was something that people could potentially get excited about. Absolutely no fan of Marathon asked for this troonslop extraction shooter, so it's even worse than a tortanic. At least Concord had the excuse of being a nothing-IP that was a stillborn, Marathon has some expectations set up behind it right away.

I think this feels the most like Anthem imo.

Scifi multi shooter that got some hype with an early announcement, then cooked for a little too long, and immediately imploded the second people got their hands on it. Just replace shit programming with plagiarism.

It'll probably have the same fate as Anthem too- they'll pretend like they're gonna fix it for six months, then move on to greener pastures and never mention it again.

like?
no one expect anything of bungie in 2025, most people don't even know about marathon and the few that do did the seinfeld "laugh and leave" gif after they heard "extraction shooter".

people shit on /v/ for trying to get another tortanic going, but a lot of that is annoyance because newfags completely missed what made it the event it was.
when the old republic was announced, star wars wasn't complete dogvomit of an IP as it is now and bioware was one of the hottest studios coming off dragon age origins and fucking mass effect. people blew their pants thinking they'd get a "world of warcraft/mass effect/kotor", the expectations were astronomical - which made the eventual game that much worse and hilarious.

the only way to get another tortanic would be gta6 turning out like nu-saints row. besides that there isn't even any real hype for anything anymore since most AAA shit is pozzed slop that runs and plays like ass, the only expectation people have is it will be shit anyway. hardly a tortanic.

When I saw that they hollowed out the UESC Marathon's logo, I knew it was going to be dogshit.

Case in point.

>hear about Marathon controversy on Xigger
>see words like "plagiarism" and "tracing"
>think it's just artfags seething about AI again
>look closer
>Bungie literally copy-pasted an artist's entire portfolio into Marathon and OC-do-not-steal recolored it
>this is the third time this has happened

If they think the "hostile takeover" by Sony is bad, I hope they enjoy being sold as scrap to DongWangChong International Holdings Inc and getting turned into a mobile game slop sweatshop.

The conditions for a new TORtanic just aren't there anymore. When TOR came out, the AAA industry still routinely made good games and like you said, Bioware had a rock solid reputation at the time. People were a hell of a lot less cynical back then and the hype was real every time a major studio announced a new game.

Compare that to now when people are more surprised when a new game is actually good.

So this is why the art style, even separated from the game itself, looks like shit. I had this thought that if the game wasn't branded as Marathon the art style would be fine, but after looking at more of the game and thinking about it longer the style still looked like shit and just didn't mesh well. Just look at the environments being hyper-sterile and the shitty overdesigned "punk" characters, they do not match at all.
Vectorheart (and by extent Acid Design which this game abuses as well) is basically only serviceable for posters, box covers (Autechre has some really cool ones, and it works because the music sort of fits the art) and very select pieces of animation (think the intro credits to Ghost in the Shell which i believe inspired at least half of all the kewl 1337 h4x0r wireframe bullshit you see going on today), trying to fashion a game out of overstylized busy art work will quickly lead to your game looking like busy clown vomit.

and busy clown vomit can work in an ironic way (see Cruelty Squad/Psycho Patrol R), but i don't think Marathon is going for the same thing.

you can look at what The Designers Republic did with WipeOut and see that the aesthetic is mostly exclusive to the art work while the graphics themselves are designed by people who want the game to be legible and not cause headaches.

IMO it's the predecessor to Microsoft's Metro design language, i.e. the best "flat design" ever thought up. The Windows 8 Start page was a huge mistake though, and I think it's because that's the place it was unexpected and therefore illegible.

Not even TORtanic was what 4chan thought it was.
The memes were great, but the game had the exact same lifecycle as every other MMO, Currently lived about 10 years longer than Star Wars Gslaxies

The AAA industry is such a fucking joke, man. Budgets in the hundreds of millions and they still steal art and can't write a good story to save their lives.
the executives unironically think its ok to do this because they see the success of slop like Fortnite and think they can just make another boring game like that and it will be automatically successful, they don't care about older gamers who want singleplayer games

I do agree.

For one, TOR eventually managed to be profitable, and while it is not a particularly good MMORPG, some of the character routes are well-written and fun to play. Also, while it's not a great cRPG, it does what few actual cRPGs do, it offers wildly different paths depending on your origin (up to a point, mind you).

After a disastrous and hilarious launch the devs were able to turn things around. though part of that was the then strength of the Star Wars IP.

While I don't think Marathon will die quite as quickly as Concord, I can't see the game lasting more than 6 months before calling it quits, not unless Bungie keeps the lights on to avoid publicly humiliating themselves.

The problem is that the industry is run by visionless midwits that are all busy chasing the current trend, and this has been the norm for more than a decade now.

That being said, the cracks are starting to come visible. The current AAA model is unsustainable, especially when these big corporations keep hiring bottom-of-the-barrel dangerhair shitlibs that have to plagiarize and steal because they have no actual talent or marketable skills, while the bulk of the grunt work is being done by subhuman jeet codemonkeys.

You end up with gargantuan teams of hundreds upon hundreds of people that require close to a decade to shit out a buggy, broken, gutted product. Meanwhile small teams of (White, male, straight) developers run circles around them.

The great irony is these very same trannies could probably make a better multiplayer FPS by themselves in their basement while jacking off with one hand with a thousandth of the budget that went into this travesty. Hell, I'm willing to go even further; I bet if you went on itch.io there's probably a lowpoly PS1-aesthetic trooncore Quake knockoff game that mogs this Marathon skinwalker seven days of the week.

Kind of dodged a bullet by never applying to them tbh
depends when. 20 years ago would've been pretty rad, these days you'd probably end up with pronouns and neurodiverse.

Currently lived about 10 years longer than Star Wars Gslaxies
to be fair swg was killed when tor came out (or a bit earlier, too lazy to check). NGE didn't help, but considering even fucking everyquest is still going somehow, who knows what the numbers would be today. probably shit considering what happens with star wars overall...

The only reason people are sympathetic towards them is because they are looking for a reason to shit on Bungie (which is a good enough reason).
No, not really, I just think it's bullshit a massive corporation can steal someone's work and use it in their alpha with zero credit and then all they have to do is say 'sowee uWu' when they get called out, meanwhile something like the Bloodborne PS1 demake gets DMCA'd by Sony because 'MUH INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY'.

Not to mention this is the same Sony currently involved in a lawsuit trying to get the right to force ISPs to ban you from the Internet for doing things they deem unacceptable.

This same Sony also put rootkits in music CDs at one point, as well as developed the infamous SecuROM DRM (which would later become Denuvo). Those show that Sony has been doing this anti-consumer shit for ages.

Maybe the Bungie devs actually went to some old folks homes to ask the Marathon fanbase what they would want in a sequel, but they just couldn't decipher the toothless demented ramblings they got in response.
