Pet theory is it's the cleanest and least cluttered room in the house. If someone's cooking for themself they can't let their kitchen get cluttered in the same way they can other rooms. You can have trash on all the surfaces in your bedroom and still sleep, but if you're going to use your kitchen, you need space to cut things, cook things and prepare things. Sure it can be cluttered but it can't so cluttered that it is incapable of being a kitchen.
