Gonna be honest, even with the soundtrack, its not really a horror game, just horror elements. Calling classic Doom horror, to me, is like calling the first Mortal Kombat games horror. Sure it scared children in the 90's, but no one here is a child anymore.The PS1 port even has a different soundtrack that emphasizes this more than the original soundtrack. Makes the game feel more like a horror game.
The ultimate point, I believe, is that you can play DOOM and its like however the fuck you want. It has par times, it has secret counters, it has enemy kill counters. Want to take your time and comb the level for everything, get all the secrets? Sure, go ahead! Want to annihilated the par time? Sure, go ahead! Want to do neither of those things? Sure, go ahead! It comes in stark contrast to modern day shooters where they have one very deliberate way of playing, with every other potential alternative either not available or punished. After Undertale, I think, almost every indie game was exactly that - badly drawn pixel RPG about feewings, just like UD itself. I think it took some time for a non-RPG Indie project (That wasn't Fez; But it was talked about negatively) to be discussed in the mainstream until 2019-2020, all because of the craze Toby Foxenstein caused. Meanwhile I can come up with many popular non-RPG indie games released after Undertale but before 2019: Nuclear Throne, Enter the Gungeon, Slay the Spire, Cuphead, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Stardew Valley, Hyper Light Drifter, the list could go on. In fact, if you examine the genres of these games, you will find out that most of them are roguelites, and that has been a trend in the last decade, since for roguelites you don't have to manually design the levels, thus saving dev time.
