A lot of those "nowhereville" states contain Indian reservations (and their "border towns"), unique Mexo-American communities, and small town people who take care of each other better than the government ever could. If anything, the electoral college gives these people a voice that matters because they either can't or won't engage with fat nobodies on Twitter.

He is not wrong in that an electoral college does prevent the ideal democratic concept of One Man, One Vote. However, in the event of a more direct method of electing someone, this would mean that most politicians would not even bother to go to Middle America and the Flyover States. This means that a large minority would be ignored by Presidential Candidates and they would simply canvass votes in big cities. That's what the Electoral college prevents above all else.
