If this Mango guy is known for acting like a buffoon when he drinks why are his friends inviting him to live streamed drinking engagements?

People not dependent on a substance really have a hard time thinking like an addict. I see it a lot they always go down the same path of whitewashing it or hoping it will be different after the last time being so bad. They have a lot of nostalgia too for the times before the use became abuse and treat the person addicted like they were before the whole thing fell apart.

And being streamers they might also hope to get the hot mess to the point where they’ll bring engagement and eyeballs while coping that they won’t go overboard.

About ten years ago, she made a post somewhere (twitter?) about how she was hanging out with old friends. I think she accused one of them of sleeping with Mang0. Long story short she ended up getting arrested that night.

I was a member of Melee Hell on Facebook about ten years ago. She was a member of the group as well. After she got arrested, the whole group started mocking her. Posted her mugshot everywhere.

I dunno. I was thinking it'd just sort of blow over at first, but Cloud9 dropping him is big. Really big.

Mango is just about as far from eSports as a man can get -- a crass alcoholic Mexican who, in his own words, would be dealing drugs for a living if it wasn't for Melee, and basically Forrest Gumped his way into Twitch fame. It's kind of a miracle that he lasted as long as he did before the inevitable crash-and-burn, when the environment he exists in is totally foreign to him; somehow, we got to the point that Joseph Marquez, former friend of Death by Rape, was playing Mario Kart with the "interviewing animals with a tiny mic" girl and 2024's Best Female Streamer™, to an audience of 50,000 people. That's crazy.

Regardless of whether you like the guy (I'm personally pretty mixed on him), Mango's relative success in the nu-entertainment sphere was the only thing keeping Old Melee alive in the eyes and hearts of onlookers. The Melee driven by crews and narratives and inter-player rivalries as opposed to thousands of Adderall-blasting twentysomethings grinding multishines behind a computer.

I honestly believe this is the death knell for the game, or at least the version of it presented in the Smash doc. It doesn't really matter whether Mango starts competing again. The validity of the old guard has been shattered; we've reached the end of Melee history.

Axe and aMSa are definitely the type to stay cool and don't involve themselves in a lotta drama, really a lot of the people playing more oddball characters seem that way tbh (besides the Ganondorf players, they seem to be dramacows half the time)

I'm referring less to the existence of old-school players in the scene and moreso the veneration of that time period in the Melee canon. Underneath all the manufactured outrage, the younger side of the community seems almost relieved that Mango's gone.
