UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Have a hot shower before bed. Yes you read that right. If it's hotter than the ambient temperature on your home then getting out of it is cool lovely relief.

And I know I've said this before but it *works*. Buy some of those small bags you put your clothes into and squish the air out of. In the morning, take your pillowcases and put them in aforementioned bag and pop in the freezer. Just before bed put them back on your pillows and enjoy.

Also moisturizer. Not for your face, for your body. I use udder cream for severe eczema. Currently lives in the fridge. It's a cool, lovely delight to slather myself in before bed.

Also drinking water is good but if you're sweating like a priest in a playground then you need to keep your electrolytes topped up too. If you've no dioralyte then a glass of squash or lemon or lime juice with a pinch- a small one, mind - of salt in works well (also good for a stinking hangover if it's the lime juice option).

I do a quick lap around my local petrol station as it has the strongest AC I've ever felt in my life and I pick up a corneto whilst I'm at it. Other then that I have my desk fan and I can always open a couple of windows to keep the air circulating.

If you have a fan put a bowl of cold water/ice in front of it. That way the air it blows will be chilled. It's very effective.
Ghetto air con ftw. A long time ago I lived on 17th floor of a high rise and this works a treat.

Also off top of my head: keep the Big Light off; don't burn candles; and for temporary relief, run your wrists under the cold tap and get them good and chilly. Also one I learned from working back shift in hospitality after getting home at 2am after 9 sweat and misery filled hours: put your feet in a bucket of cold water.

Oh another thing: if you're wanting to quit smoking,I found it easier over summer than over winter. The thought of burning something in my mouth when it was hot as balls out was awful. It took less effort and willpower to quit over summer. If you do and if you want to and are ready to,make the most of it and go for it.

Just as an aside, have you ever watched anything by Cambrian Chronicles? It seems to be a perfect storm of autism, maps, history, and Emperor Claudius. The amount of history crammed into the valleys is probably the other reason why it's called The Big Country.

(And if you remember that one...)

Who needs air conditioning when you can just run a hose for a few minutes in the backyard.
Just don't drink from it, or people will call you mean names on the internet.

I have watched a lot of Cambrian Chronicles as Welsh History has always interested me greatly.

Very interesting that two new Right-Wing parties are starting now, when Labour are sliding and talk of regime change isn't going away,

FWIW, though I will still be backing Reform UK, I welcome both Lowe's and Habib's new parties, but just how well they'll do - who knows?

Certainly, Reform UK show no sign of slowing down and there's the chance that Restore Britain and Advance UK will soon go the same way as UKIP. Alternatively, post Nigel stepping down from Politics in a few years time (hopefully after a few years as PM) they could gain from Reform UK or amalgamate as one which would be the ideal thing.

Even if by then we're the 'Nationalist Party of the United Kingdom' then providing things are better than today, I doubt many will mind.

These parties smell foul. It's the type of games they play when they want to split the vote. Labour got in because Reform and conservatives split the vote. Trying to do the same to reform is short sighted or destructive. The better option would be to get Reform into power than pressure them with a more radical group. The radical group can take over Reform or pressure them in the right direction.

Illustrator Aljoscha Quooss has made several tiktoks alleging that Matt Lucas sexually assaulted him, and that Matt Lucas and David Walliams have been working together to sexually assault many young men in the creative industries over the last 20 years.

View attachment 7540348

It's being discussed on Fauxmoi, and in the comments they're mentioning a British poet Kiran Millwood Hargrave, who has
apparently sharing on social media for several years now that David Walliams is actively kept away from young women staff in the British publishing industry, but I can't find anything about that anywhere else yet.

This description is almost identical to the one in Baby Reindeer, it makes me wonder if the producer in that was supposed to be Lucas or Walliams.

Matt Lucas is weird looking, but I don't know whether or not I'd classify him as perverted just based on his looks (it's everything else he does that sets off the alarms).

He's lost an awful lot of weight recently and looks like shit now.

Lucas looks weird cos he has

Why are the walls so thick oh god bros I'm dying why don't the windows open any wider please help
Go rinse yourself off in the shower but then instead of drying yourself off with a towel go stand naked in front of a fan for a couple minutes, the water on your skin will make the air feel extra cold.

Otterly isn't a day over 30 you dick!
Teeny bit older than that but not granny aged.

Ok.
-if you have a loft hatch, open it. Hot air rises
-any cross ventilation, open it but ONLY when the sun isn’t on the windows.
-soak an old bedsheet and hang it up in whichever of the open windows most air is coming it. Swamp cooler. It does work
-if you have sash windows, open top and bottom for convention. Hinge windows (whyyyy?) you’re shit out of luck
During the hot part of the day, it’s often better to close the windows and the curtains, to stop heat building. Open everything including any windows in the loft onto the roof in the evening when the heat drops. Close before bed if it’s burglar accessible
If you’ve got a cooker hood, running the fan will pull air in through any open windows so when you open everything when it’s cooler stick the fan on as well, The idea is to dump heat at night and prevent it building in the day.
Run yourself a bath of cold water and leave it there, go sit in it as needed.
@BongoMongo is right about the hot shower before bed.
Ice lollies are a survival need so just eat them

Small correction but "Restore Britain" isn't a party. It reads to me something like the European Research Group a la Jacob Rees Mogg, where it's intent is to push/advocate for certain policies, functioning as a sort of in-parliament lobbyist group that signals to people that X-MP believes in x, y, and z.

This is Rupert's announcement on X. At least it doesn't split the vote. I think shoving good MPs into Reform is the way to go personally so what Lowe's doing here is a decent compromise.
Today, we are launching Restore Britain - a movement for those who believe that we need to fundamentally change the way Britain is governed.

We will build a policy platform, together. A movement will be created, together. A path will be forged, together.

This is not a political party, but a fundamentally different way of doing things.

Members from political parties are very welcome to join us on this journey, if they share our values and want to be part of a bottom-up movement that has the potential to transform Britain.

I do not have all the answers. I am not a politician. I find myself in Parliament, independent and isolated without a party. But strangely, during my time in politics, I have never felt more part of a team. There are good, talented, dedicated people all over the country who are tired of petty Westminster politics. Now is not the time for another political party. It is our job to bring people together, providing a vehicle that can deliver the radical restoration that is required.

But I need your help.

Restore Britain will be built on a very different model. As a member of Restore Britain, you will have the opportunity to vote on the policies and principles that you believe in. With this data, we will put pressure on the Government and other political parties to recognise and act on the will of the British people.

Initial policies will be released over the coming weeks to be approved by you, our members.

Low tax, small state, slash immigration, protect British culture, restore Christian principles, carpet-bomb the cancer of wokery, fight lawfare, empower individual enterprise, and plenty more. We will provide substance, detail, a plan.

Where appropriate - private prosecutions will be launched, legal challenges brought, and judicial reviews funded. We will fund independent investigative journalists to root out corruption, and an FOI taskforce to expose Government waste. A unit specifically for whistleblowers will be established to amplify their concerns.

2029 is the ultimate objective, but that does not mean we cannot effect real and positive change in the next four years. If we don’t, there won’t be a Britain to restore.

Being in Parliament, I am uniquely positioned to hold the Government to account. Our independent Rape Gang Inquiry is the most successful crowdfunding effort in British political history helping to force the Government's hand on holding a national inquiry, and in less than 24 hours, our parliamentary petition to release Lucy Connolly received over 100,000 signatures.

Just think what we could achieve if we were doing that every week.

We won’t talk, we will do, we will act, we will deliver.

Being a member will give you a real say in how the movement progresses and evolves - direct democracy.

We must aim, together, to implement The Great Repeal Act in 2029, that can then be followed by national restoration.

Your country, your responsibility.

Let’s Restore Britain.

Rupert

Stick a towel outside your window, trap it in the frame. It stops the heat getting inside in the first place. Same is true with cars, leave a reflector cover on top of your windscreen instead of inside it.

Actually no. If there's any breeze at all a nice trick is to open both sides but different amounts. The one that is more closed will direct the breeze towards the one that is more open, funnelling it into your house. All you have to do is pick which direction is most into the wind. If you're totally becalmed of course, you're out of luck. Personally the best advice is usually to open windows at night and get as much through draft as possible - ideally a loft window for maximum heat loss - and then keep the windows closed for as long as it remains cooler indoors than out.

All that said, I still feel we're being gaslit by the BBC and it's not that hot.

They call it a heatwave I call it a small sweat (when wearing my jacket). That image though, I do remember 2022 being genuinely bad. Wasn't it around 30c in some areas for a day or so?

It has been annoyingly warm this past week but not hot or drench worthy. Perhaps they don't know how to turn off the radiators at the television centre :^).

I remember being at school, and for weeks it was 36 °C and there were no complaints then. It appears from a few sources that the Tories are backing the rebels, which is also a jab at Babadook, as she is trying to reshuffle them.

Reeves is fucked beyond repair though as she is trying to tax ISAs out of spite. I think Starmer and his cabinet are pissed that the party is not as communist as them, frankly.
