Minecraft

It really is a mystery how nobody has managed to make a decent, (semi-)generalized Minecraft clone game that wasn't somehow worse than Minecraft itself.
I really like Luanti (formerly Minetest, see also the minuscule Farms thread on it). It takes the "moddability first" approach, to the point where most people write completely new games on top of the engine instead of extending the base game with content like is usually done with Minecraft. There is even a quite enjoyable clone of vanilla Minecraft on top of the base game. I played quite a bit of that a few years back while I was stuck with only a low-power laptop and no desktop PC, and tinkered around with the engine's Lua modding interface. It's a pretty competent variation on the genre imo, the engine seems decent (except for the lack of out-of-the-box support for extra dimensions; seriously? The world space is huge so you can hack around that by subdividing the "overworld" by coordinates, but it is pretty retarded that you need to do that) but there sadly aren't really any decent tech mods at the moment, and the visuals are far off from the years of polish Minecraft has received. I think its lack of popularity really boils down to the fact that Minecraft is a one-time purchase, there isn't really a strong incentive to find alternatives to a "good enough" product unless you have license autism. Not immune to that complacency myself; I had the idea to make a serious effort at writing an IC2/GregTech-style expansion for it in my bucket list for years now. Maybe one day...

My main problem with the games made on Luanti is none of them really try and go beyond copying Minecraft or being one and done tech demos. Vintage Story at least does new things you don't see in vanilla Minecraft even if it's not my thing, whereas Luanti just feels like generic brand Minecraft. I think the engine is in a good place, just wish the games devs were more creative.

Update - June 27: Original Hypixel Studios founder Simon Collins-Laflamme says he'd "put 25 millions USD by myself to finish Hytale, that’s how much I believe in it," seemingly half-jokingly suggesting a buy-back from Riot.

"No kickstarter, just raw passion, high pressure and high risk taking," he said in a tweet. "Reduce scope: legacy engine, pc only first, open source some parts, small team, cut unfinished features to accelerate towards beta. Get players in ASAP to support development. I even already have a dozen of Hytale legacy engine veterans working with me.

"That’s what I would do, but I have not reached out, I’m just thinking about it now because of the bullying haha. This would be a massive challenge and impact all aspects of my life so I would probably need to consult with my family first!"

Following the cancellation of Minecraft-inspired sandbox RPG Hytale, Simon Collins-Laflamme, the original founder of developer Hypixel Studios and owner of the Hypixel server network, says the game didn't seem to be all that far from release when he last worked on the project before the studio was sold to Riot Games.

"During my time working on Hytale in 2016-2019, it was maybe to the absolute maximum 2 years away from a PC release with the legacy engine and vision," he said in a lengthy Twitter post. "I still have videos, screenshots and old client builds to attest to that. All developers from that time that I've talked to say the same."

Collins-Laflamme was responding to a post from former Hytale principal engineer Kevin Carstens, who implied "feature creep" was at the heart of the game's protracted troubles. "Systems that were already far ahead of Minecraft at the time were completely re-invented to make them 'even better' resulting fuck all," he said bluntly.

----

So basically they were almost ready to ship the version of the game written in Java to production in 2019, but then Riot bought the game in 2020, the founder immediately stopped working on it, and the team that Riot had working on the engine rewrite to C++ completely failed to deliver a playable game in the last 5 years.

From these facts we can determine that it might be Riot's fault. The founder seems to still prefer Java, talking about how he has "a dozen legacy engine veterans working with him" (on what?). Java is shit and should not be aspired towards. Hypixel Skyblock is very technically impressive, but the only reason why it was made the way it was, is because of Minecraft. If you're making a new game then you shouldn't limit yourself to something that is so obviously a hindrance. And everyone knows Java fucking sucks.

Just look at Factorio. Kovarex was also inspired by Minecraft and wanted to make his own game. He recognized the shittiness of Java and chose C++ for his engine as well. When it released, it looked like shit but people didn't care because the gameplay was solid. Fast forward to today, and you'd be hard pressed to name a better example of optimization, polish, delivery on promises, and just overall excellence in terms of game development, because the devs just kept updating the game. It's not entirely a fair to compare a mostly singleplayer 2d game to a massive 3d undertaking, but they didn't have to develop the greatest game of all time immediately, they just needed to get something working that was fun.

That's what should have happened with Hytale. Whether the rewrite was a good or bad idea, I do think it was ill advised at that stage of development, if what the founder says about less than 2 years to a release date is true. However it probably would have been best to acknowledge the nature of Java while also acknowledging how much work had already gone into the game at that point. They could have released a Java build while explicitly laying out their plans to migrate to the new engine in the future. Considering how they literally shut down while trying to rework everything immediately, it's safe to say that was the wrong choice.

"There are already dozens of stories like this from former devs coming out in the past few days. and we didn't need to release in a 'perfect state,' in my opinion."

Yeah it was probably Riot's fault. I wish some of these developers would just come out and say it. But instead you get chucklefucks like this, the former security/IT head:

Hytale: what could possibly go wrong when you hire new leadership that thinks the original team is incompetent? Oh the whole project ends up going in circles until it dies. The community should be angry at the mismanagement that stole the opportunity for hytale to flourish.

>Did Riot Games ruin Hytale with their corporate greed?

Riot was an absolute pleasure to work with, from people to leaders. They understood the power of empowering and giving folks agency. The issues were all internal to Hytales leadership.

Okay, so who fucking hired the new leadership? The old leadership, before quitting? Even though the founder wanted to release a Java version of the game? And why did the problems start happening in 2019-2020, right when Riot bought the studio? This shit doesn't make any sense. If Riot was such a pleasure and they gave "folks" "agency", then maybe they gave too much. Maybe they greenlit a retarded plan that shouldn't have been executed, exactly as it was laid out.

Much like Microsoft and Mojang and the tendency to blame Microsoft for all the shit that's gone wrong with Minecraft. Sometimes the studio is just being retarded

Something fun just leaked ...and it's fucking crazy.
Really good autism for any oldschool fans.

I present, secret Mojang project "Rex Kwon Do"
Brickcraft.webpBrickcraft_1.webpBrickcraft_2.webpBrickcraft_3.webpBrickcraft_Thing.webpBrickcraft_Tree.webp
It's a custom C++ engine with a Lua modding API. It was a collaboration with LEGO that fell through (Although the Minecraft LEGO sets deal was unaffected)

I'm starting to think that he was actually a really good programmer.
for the current standards? not even really good, just left alone.
every fucking april fools update being some really decent shit tells mojang devs are tied into some BDSM tier shit and they can't be assed to do anything either since april fools updates are always full with bugs.

I'd never heard of Hytale but looking at the website I dunno who this aesthetic would appeal to.

It looks like someone applied a "realism" mod to Minecraft; not the worst thing I've ever seen but there's definitely something uncanny about the faces that would put me off playing for any amount of time.
The "deliberately ugly as fuck" NPCs in Paint the Town Red legitimately look more interesting and less disturbing than this.

Copper tools and armor, copper golem that apparently sorts out items for you and a copper chest that probably does something but I don't know
Y'know, I'm kinda glad Achievement Hunter/Rooster Teeth are gone and don't have to pretend to like the pointless garbage that keeps getting crammed into the game anymore. At least it was funny when Gavin set things on fire in the "Title Update Appreciation" episodes.

So all shit that mods did literally a decade ago. Copper chests by IronChests, Copper equipment by most of the techmods that added it by that point (1.8.7 if you want to be truly precise, 10 year anniversary of 1.8.8 is in 27 days), Golem Sorting System by Thaumcraft- for those that weren't around back then and reading in just now.
Not even figuratively anymore but literally. And since it's being tested on Bugrock, it won't be stable on Java until 1.30 and there won't be a mod to make it actually useful until 1.28.
And some fucktard is going to backport the textures to 1.7.10 mods too, i bet.

they literally said they would not add shit that mods already did and they do this.
it's fucking sad at this point, they must be so fucking bored.

MEANWHILE THE FUCKING MODDING API IS YET TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY.

They must think that the userbase is diluted enough or enough of them are cocksuckers that it'd slip under the radar.
Not wrong, but insulting all the same.

When was the last time a game with Microsoft's arm this firmly up its ass got modding support that wasn't hostile to the actual modders?

You know they're running out of ideas when they ACTUALLY make copper useful after all these years finally allowing you to make tools and armor with it (which ultimately means nothing because of how easy it is to get and make iron gear and further invalidates chain armor) and looked through their catalog of interesting mobs they didn't add because "muh (rigged) contests" for something to add. Holy shit these people are pathetic.
When was the last time a game with Microsoft's arm this firmly up its ass got modding support that wasn't hostile to the actual modders?
The day they officially add a modding API for Java the sun will engulf the Earth. And it'll be shit that no one will use and will probably make modding harder somehow.

This reminds me. If Bugrock runs on C++ and Java runs on Java (duh), and C++ runs better than Java, then why is Bugrock the buggiest of the two versions? Is there something about Minecraft's gameplay that makes it better suited for Java? Is it Notch magic? Or is it nu-Mojang's sheer incompetence?

At least they’re making an attempt to have copper be less useless. I’m not sure it’ll be a successful attempt, but it’s an attempt.
Trying to retroactively fit copper into the early game more than a decade after the game's release was never going to be smooth.

A saw is better than a knife for cutting through a log, but if you're a total retard who doesn't know how to use a saw then you're not going to make much progress.

At this rate go full HAYO! and add quarries, macerators, item/fluid pipes and the rest of the IC/BC tech stack. What a fucking joke. :story:
