I'm pretty sure I used to play on custom servers on Battlefield 3 on PS3 back in the day, as I clearly remember their overly specific names mentioning game mode, respawn rules etc. while in Battlefield Bad Company 2 (earlier in the series) you'd just pick a game mode and you wouldn't even know the server.

I'm not sure if that was just EA renting customizable servers to players, while they still retained ownership/control of the backend code and server admin could just modify a few things, though

EA licensed the server binaries to companies to host the community servers for them, the hosting in these platforms worked similary to Counter Strike, you can modify a CFG but in battlefield you cant insert new stuff other than some coding to kick for using snipers and shit.

In the case of battlefield, those binaries exist but we dont have it. Venice Unleashed managed to reverse enginner it for their own platform and build tools for modifying maps + adding new coding to the game, gameplay mechanics, etc... Battlefield 3 is fully moddeable
