All this shit about Riordan makes me glad for once that I refused to read his books as a child. The plot sounds like shit on top of all the pandering. No matter what trannies say about HP, it's very readable. PJO sounds boring and cringeworthy even if you're in the target demographic.

I don't know if it was just me, but when those books came out, it seemed SO. OBVIOUS. that Riordan was trying to copy the "ordinary child finds out they are extraordinary, gets whisked to a special school/camp to learn about being the special thing, gets two best friends, goes on adventures, fights the Ultimate Evil" template.
There were quite a few of them like that from around that point that were clearly following a fairly similar template. Arguably Skulduggery Pleasant and Artemis Fowl could be considered that too.

With that said Percy Jackson hewed a lot closer to the Potter mould than either of those.

I read one or two of the Riordan books when I was younger because people kept promoting them as the best thing since sliced bread, but I just couldn't get into them - they were boring and unoriginal, both plots and characters. His books are also stunningly racist - he has a lot of "diversity" but pretty much every character who isn't white and straight is reduced down to blatant offensive stereotypes, way way worse than anything JKR ever did, and he only gets a pass because he's a white guy and he bends the knee to the "kweer" crowd.

For the record, I adored Harry Potter as a kid and was always an avid reader - I had stacks and stacks of books and spent every penny I could scrounge up at school book fairs. My favorite writer growing up was Tamora Pierce, who writes the most amazing books for young girls and women. Not enjoying Riordan's writing wasn't because I wasn't interested in reading or YA fiction, it was because it was incredibly bad writing.

There's a tabletop RPG game called Scion that does pretty much what Riordan is trying to do with his books, but better and in a playable ttrpg form. Well, first edition is really good, anyway. Second edition is basically "rewrite this, but for the queerios who won't stop hanging round the local game shop refusing to buy anything unless it caters to them" and is generally much softer in tone and turns Loki into a they/them. 🙄 First edition was good, though.

A lot of YA followed HP with the urban fantasy template. PJ is just one of the few series that managed to make it past the first book, which should tell you how abhorrent the quality of other copycats were. And "two friends, adventures, fight ultimate evil" is practically every fantasy YA novel. Most people saw the similarities, but you need to read something while waiting for the next HP to drop/after HP is over. I read a lot of me-too YA stuff while waiting for HP and if you think percy jackson was bad, I don't know what to tell you. You had a ton of first time writers slapping together their knock off Harry Potter books. Publishers were so afraid they would miss out on the next Harry Potter they would publish even the most boring slop imaginable.

I made the mistake of reading the second series of PJ and it goes absolutely crazy with the pandering. The first books of the original series weren't too bad, mostly just characters with non-anglo names. But at some point he gets high on his own supply and makes everyone a flaming faggot

mixed in with some of that “things teenage girls like are only made fun of because of sexism so we need to pretend they’re actually good now” stuff.
I hate that this has happened so much simply because it's such bullshit.

Twilight was not made fun of solely because teenage girls (or women in general for that matter) liked it. It was primarily because it was, and still is, absolute garbage that got undeservedly extremely popular.

Which is doubly funny when you consider how many times JK Rowling was rejected for HP before finally getting published.
That is exactly why they let so much garbage get printed. They were completely blindsided by HP, the boss wasn't going to accept it if the editors would let another HP escape them. If you can't trust your own taste, you just okay everything. You hope that the 100 failures you okayed are compensated by the one HP 2.0 you accepted. And because the children were in a reading mood sales in general were higher for a while, further muddying the waters. It was fun having a bunch of new options at the library, but a lot of it was bad. Picking up PJ for the weekend was a lot better than many of the other books you could've picked up.

Fuck yeah, free publicity!

I'm unsure but doesn't the publishing company get paid when the book store stocks the books? So the book store would just be taking the loss?
Yep.

Publishing and printing would be unworkable if they depended on a few dollars here and there, which is how books mostly sell.

Plus JK has such fuck you money now, she could never sell another book or get another potter based deal and still would remain wealthier than any of her haters until she dies.

The only way the Troons could impoverish her is if they somehow convinced her to give away all her money and property.

I realized it was complete garbage even as a teen girl, and I still enjoyed reading it and watching those god awful movies. The ending kind of ruined it for me, though, like finding a hair in your McDonald's. Why was the werewolf dude in love with a baby? If Stephanie Meyer had said anything anti-trans, you just know these people would be calling for her head for being a pedophile.

Sorry for the rant

You should apologise for more of your posts.

I have a bit of affection for Twilight, mainly because of Nuttymadam. She was like a real life Annie Wilkes, and I used to find her rants and sperging about Twilight - the uhhhh-maaaaazing buuuuuuuhk!! - very amusing and endearing.

I miss her. Last I heard, she was going to have gastric band surgery... And that was six years ago and she's not posted any new videos since. I hope she didn't die on the operating table. :(

what do the comments say?

Most are either suggesting donating copies to charity (cool, more free publicity!) or pointing out to the bullheaded OP how stupid this idea is for obvious reasons

I lived in San Antonio for about 8 years, and since Riordan is from there, his books were treated like they were the gospels or something.

When in reality, they’re just the Greek myths (which are already beaten to death) if they were a tween sitcom on Disney Channel

Remember when they were fantasizing about Imane Khelif taking away Harry Potter from her in a French court?
Speaking of insane pettiness.

A gender-critical lawyer was banned by her vet because of her belief that there are only two biological sexes, a judge has said.
Allison Bailey, a retired criminal defence barrister and co-founder of the LGB Alliance, sued Palmerston Veterinary Group’s surgery in Walthamstow, north-east London, after she was “expelled” from the practice.
The practice claimed she was thrown out for being rude to staff, but the judge rejected the argument, saying she had faced “unlawful discrimination” because of her beliefs.
Ms Bailey said it was the first case of its kind, showing the courts will stand up for women denied goods and services if they do not believe trans women are women.

“This judgment shows that it is unlawful to deny services to people who believe that sex is binary, biological, immutable, and of vital importance,” she said.

“For too long, activists in a range of settings have promoted the incorrect view that it is somehow good or kind, or in furtherance of trans people’s rights, to unlawfully discriminate in this way.”
Ms Bailey has demanded £25,000 compensation. The amount of damages will be decided later.
The surgery claimed the reason Ms Bailey was told not to return was because of its “zero-tolerance policy” on abusive behaviour towards staff, after she shouted at a practitioner when she was told that one of her pets was overweight.
But Ms Bailey argued in court that she was expelled because her gender-critical views were opposed by Dr Liz Munro, a former staff member at the veterinary practice.

Judge Andrew Holmes said that whilst Ms Bailey “can be seen by others as being direct to the point of rudeness,” the vet’s practice had failed to prove that it’s staff were unaware of her views or her friendship with outspoken gender critic Rowling, and that those views played no part in the move to ban her.
“There is strong evidence that Ms Bailey’s gender-critical beliefs were known within the practice,” he said. “I do not accept that Ms Munro was unaware of Ms Bailey’s friendship with JK Rowling.

“Dr Munro revealed clearly that if she did not regard Ms Bailey as a bigot, it was only by a hair’s breadth.”
“On balance, it is likely that Dr Munro knew about Ms Bailey’s gender critical beliefs before she was involved in taking the decision to terminate.”

Ms Bailey, who is a lesbian, said: “I was a client of Palmerston Vets for 13 years when they expelled me. I never went to the vet to talk about issues around sex and gender.
“I would not have dreamed of doing so – they raised it with me, and made me the subject of internal gossip as a result. I was given no warning and no indication that I might be expelled.
“As many gender-critical women will know, this is all too often the case where anyone expresses a view in support of the rights of women and LGB people that conflicts with the views of trans rights activists and an authoritarian LGBTQ+ community and lobby.”

During the case, Ms Bailey’s barrister Akua Reindorf KC told the court the practice’s “culture” included promotion of “trans activist material”, saying Dr Munro had shared information to staff members about how to address trans clients by their preferred pronouns and other preferred language use.

In the witness box, Dr Munro replied: “I don’t believe that I hold strong views. Am I some sort of radical pro-trans activist? No.
“I believe I hold views that many people in society have and the feeling behind this was one of kindness, inclusivity and treating people as you wish to be treated.”
Dr Munro agreed with the barrister that she found gender-critical views “objectionable”, adding: “It’s not a position I agree with, but I don’t know if I’d say someone was a bigot – maybe I would.”

Maya Forstater, chief executive of human rights charity Sex Matters, said: “This is the first case to come to court of discrimination based on gender-critical beliefs in relation to goods and services. We know that many people and organisations have experienced this.
“We can expect to see more of these kinds of cases unless service providers recognise that gender-critical beliefs are worthy of respect in a democratic society.”
A spokesman for Linnaeus, which owns Palmerston Veterinary Group, said: “Our focus is on providing the best possible care for pets in a welcoming environment, and supporting our teams.”

Honestly I can believe this terf popped the fuck off at the vet and it wasn't about anything other than being a massive Karen.
Apparently vets have a significantly higher suicide risk than other professionals and a huge amount of the stress comes from "client abuse". It's a whole thing apparently.
