There is no separation of concerns. No structure. Nothing.
It looks like he done something, never bothered to refactor it later. And if it caused some issues latter he just added more variables to go around it.

This is proof for me that programmers need some math in their life. The way he constructs box for check could easily be done by just moving player box by player_direction vector multiplied by talking_distance. Not to mention that he probably could get away with only checking if point spawned at (player_direction * talking_distance) is inside target box.
He also uses 4 variables for each box that surrounds player, even though player will always only face one direction. And then or's them.
Such a bizzare code. Maldy not only is bad at programming, he is bad at logical thinking.
