Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

Why is YT so heavy on my GPU playing like a 1440p uses like 100% of my gpu in task manager and then the browser starts lagging like hell. I swear a couple of years ago with a shittier computer it wasn't as bad.

They're ramping up CPU/GPU usage for people using firefox/adblockers. Also they're A/B testing with AV1 codec videos which are more resource intensive.

You know what I love about about the YouTube app? When YouTube randomly decides to just outright remove all the buttons at the bottom of the screen and in doing so making it impossible to access my profile or my subscriptions

Like look at this they removed the buttons
And I go looking at Twitter and a bunch of other people are having this problem as well
On the browser it's even better, sometimes the UI doesn't load when you click on a video, it happens to me a lot when it's a Youtube Short. I wonder if it's a way to fuck with ad block users.

So you've noticed Larry somehow manages to be in the comment section of every other video you watch too?
I see him sometimes in the comments on Clownfish TV.
Tay Zonday is also a regular in Louis Rossmann's comment section.

YouTube is supposed to be an American company, right? So why do they have offices in India?

The CEO is Indian. Jeets only hire their own.

Am I the only one that barely feels like the comments are made by actual human beings? I know that a good chunk of them are but there are comment sections where it feels like the equivalent of watching those videos of two AIs "talking" to each other and it just gives an uncanny feeling.

They feel off and it keeps getting worse from there. Bots, AIs, its all illusion of human engagement.

Moments like this remind you the Dead Internet theory isnt a theory and with AIs sadly destined to become more present, you will not be able to trust what you see and read on the internet less than ever. Its kind of depressing actually, especially to those that had the internet as a special place away from the world's nonsense. The internet, at least a version of it worth engaging at all, might have its days counted.
There are bots that create an entire comment thread and it ends with a name or a link not in url form. At first I thought people were engaging with a bot but it turned out that every reply in the thread was made by bots with a different name.
I saw this under one of Anton Petrov videos, it really creeped me out.

I haven't left a comment on any videos in 2 years or more because my comments kept being deleted. It's possible the only things allowed to leave comments are bots.
Glad I'm not the only one to have that issue. I think now my comments are getting shadowbanned on Youtube.
It might be a schizo theory but I wonder if it's because I'm using an ad blocker.

Youtube isn't showing channels that I'm subscribed to. It's mostly years old videos the algorithm thinks I want to watch. They've over-curated my list and now it's worthless.
The search engine in the Youtube history page is also broken.

These bots tend to be shilling someone who supposedly engages in crypto and always give out a WhatsApp account number. I find the bottom of the bot chain and start reporting them all. The first comments for those are the weird ones since they start out normal then go into saying something about investments and even naming a person.

I think anyone who doesn't have a leftist opinion gets shadowbanned at some point. I have notifications turned off,, so I don't know if there's a drop in engagementwith my comments.

Wasn't she some SJW who implemented a bunch of censorship?
She turned Youtube into a platform for the corporations and mainstream news. Neal Mohan continues her legacy as he destroys the platform with the Youtube Shorts and idiotic UI changes.
Her sister co-created 23andMe, the company that made DNA testing "cool" until they went bankrupt and sold all the data to Big Pharma.

I'm starting to get ads in recommended now

They've realized that Shorts are overrun with jeet AI slop
Is it? I just get a reflection of my recommended in shorts. However it breaks after a few swipes because it detects the adblocker

How does Youtube determine the bitrate of a video you upload? Do you have any say in that matter?

For instance, I just downloaded a video from Red Letter Media and one from Gamers Nexus. The former is about 1500kbps and the latter is 3000kbps.

Don't sleep on how bloated the Youtube website is. Twitch is like that too. I have an old laptop that cannot play videos smoothly on either of those sites above 720. But yt-dlp+mpv is just fine.
Those two websites probably have gravitational pull with how fucking heavy they are.

It’s true. YouTube is going absolutely crazy with the adverts. Screwgle is still butthurt over ad blockers and they’ve doubled down on the few viewers who don’t know how to install them. The ads they add when you simply pause a video are abominable. I wish there was a video site that could sincerely compete with YT for eyeballs.

they are also getting creative with how they block access to people with adblock: On some videos I am now getting a message that says "this video is members only, sign in to watch it" . . . on a video that was not and is not members only. I'm more than a little curious if this is because the standard "log in to view thos video" BS isn't working anymore or because the code is being written by people who are just that incompetent now.
