It's been determined that the "scuffed and miserable" theme of the season, including Sam's character, were intentional and some part of a larger thing that was going to happen before the season ended prematurely. That, or the premature ending was known about weeks before the season began, so they shoehorned the scuffed-ness in to add some kind of weird "it's all over" feel and justify what was to come. Regardless, it was weird and off-putting.

Really think Sam isn't even doing the "comedian" route as much as he just tries to Hollywood ladderclimb. That's why he's so obsessed with Joe Rogan, its what he wants to do. Pivot from having to do things like make content to just having a show where you sit at a table and spout nonsense and make millions of dollars from drooling, slackjawed, (probably fatherless) fans that think everything you say is pure gold. That's why he can win when he's up against hacks like TedX and Idubbbz because he's just the king of hacks. As soon as he faces off against someone that has real comedy chops, with real wit, someone that has no idea about his reputation, he gets exposed for being a big fish in a small pond and the only thing he knows how to do otherwise is throw a fit because it usually makes people give up.

Anyways this is essentially the most blatant proof that Sam's gotten too lost in the sauce of e-politics. Most of his comedy at this point is just coasting off his persona and he's resigned himself to basic Internet right wing commentary, so when he's forced to deal with an old school improv comic who's just trying to twist everything into a bit, he spergs out because his image of being the edgy shooter/Candyman/ultra-banned professional troll isn't being "respected".
