If we look at the movement of chi (treating the roads like two-way rivers) there is a much stronger "river" on the entrance side and an even larger east-west one towards the Goodwill. The belief is that this would create a lot of "churn" and unstableness in life unless you can somehow protect yourself from all that movement.

Even if you don't believe in "chi" as a force or thing-that-exists, it's a very helpful shorthand for looking at things that we know exist and can make life miserable such as light (from the shopping area nearby and the stadium down the street), noise from traffic, smells, airflow, etc.
