If you need to have a book's character be literally just like you to find their story enjoyable, then you probably are lazy and dumb and apathetic, with a healthy dose of self-obsessed in there as well.

BONUS: this blog is to promote the book she's writing. I don't understand why people who clearly hate reading keep wanting to write books. It's gonna be shit, no one's gonna read it, no matter how ~inclusive~ it is.

Case in point: Megg Eli--one of the mastermind's behind DashCon and her own favorite author--wrote this amazingly inclusive masterpiece of a novel, featuring a gay couple, a lesbian couple, gay cheating, and I guess maybe a bisexual guy. It's sold about 5 copies.

Whatever happened to just relating to characters because you find them interesting? I've read books with female protagonists that I found myself relating to, and I never said "Eh, she doesn't have a dick, I don't care about her."

Generally, if you don't read, your writing skills will be very...average, and it will show. So, i'm not one to burst somebody's illusion bubble, but...

I can't help but wonder what kind of "masterwork" she's shitting out...

Speaking of this, I took a look at the excerpt... she certainly ain't no Hans Christian Andersen or L. Frank Baum.

I haven't been able to bring myself to give this bitch $4 of my hard-earned money, but a few blogs did read-alongs right after Dashcon and, hoo, it's so much worse than this excerpt would make you think.

Mind linking?

Seriously though, Chicagoland? What kind of name is that?

I have no fucking idea.

I have an issue with her mixture of a fairytale setting with modern tech - stuff like this just doesn't work. Tolkien once said that the more technological something is the less fantastic it is, and I've always felt he was right.

(Then again, if L. Frank Baum could put robots and gramophones in Oz... but then again, he made it work.)

If I recall, Megg's from Chicago. So I guess it's a case of "Write what you know".

Here's a spoiler, but later on, our quirky group of quirky heroes quirk their way into actual Chicago...somehow. So the kingdom is literally on the edge of Chicago, Illinois.

I think there's a difference between say, what Baum did, which is sorta steampunkish, and what tumblrinas do, which is basically "our modern lives, but with dragons and fairies lol"

Tumblr is obsessed with the idea of "urban fantasy" for some reason. Maybe they think old school/timeless fantasy is racist or something, or they're too obsessed with Harry Potter and can't be more creative and create a new world from scratch.

But again, magical realism can work (hispanic authors like Borges or Marquez have a mastery of it) but I feel tumblr just obsesses over it just to look "cool".

Most of the posts I've seen about "improved urban fantasy" on tumblr seem to be complaining about a lack of diversity. But of course it gets turned up to 11 with "imagine if there were orc rights movements!" and shit like that. Maybe it started as people being sick of the generic YA fantasy "vampires and werewolves heterosexual romance" books that keep coming around, but turned into "elves dressed like hipsters with smartphones and asexual wizards at starbucks" type posts.

Honestly this is the only one I can get behind.

"I want"

You want someone to write it for you. Don't wait up.

I would say too obsessed with Harry Potter. I used to be indifferent to the books before Tumblr. Now I kinda loathe them.

Is it no surprise that I wouldn't read any of these? When I read fantasy I don't want to it to be like everyday life but with gnomes and trolls. I expect the opposite.

Honestly I'm okay with a Tumblr user not writing it themselves if they know they don't have the talent to do so. Still a cool idea.

They're obsessed with urban fantasy because of Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. See, more traditional fantasy settings are clogged up with scary cishet shitlord boys, but SPN and Buffy pander to "progressive" feminists. So they only really follow those, and that means their experience with fantasy is frequently limited to urban.

Be fair to Buffy--it was made before Whedon turned into the massive shill he is today. The show even pokes fun at the self righteous sjw types numerous times.

....Supernatural is pure pandering nonsense though. Every bit.
