Wheel of Time - Discuss the Books and the Canceled TV Show

Chapter 5: Winternight.

Tam and Rand arrive home at Tam’s Farm, much like Tam himself the Al’Thor house does not look like much at first, but it is solid and well built. Tam checks the edge of the Farm’s fences for signs of the Black Cloaked visitor but finds none, and the Sheep do not seem to be disturbed so Tam relaxes a bit and the pair do some chores, however Tam’s spear is never far from where he is working.

As night falls, Tam prepares supper and calls Rand into the house. Rand begins to prepare tea for dinner, Tam goes upstairs and pulls something out of the old trunk that Rand had never seen Tam open. Tam returns with a sword belted around his waist, a sword with a Heron on the Seethe, one on the hilt and one etched into the blade.

Rand and Tam speak of the sword and where Tam had gotten it, Tam showing distaste for the blade, drawing it and examining it, despite presumably decades in storage the light still glimmers on a sharp edge.

Suddenly something thumps at the door, Rand panics for a moment thinking it is the Black Cloak Rider..then the lock on the door shatters and a giant goat horned figure bursts in..its arm going in front of it’s face as the sudden fire light blinds it.

Rand throws the tea kettle, full of boiling water at the beastly figure, however Tam strikes just as fast. Going from sitting in his favorite chair to slashing the beast across the chest in the time it takes the kettle to go across the room. As more of the beasts try to get past the corpse of their dead companion Tam lifts the Table and blockades the door with it, telling Rand to run.

Rand goes to exit the back door of the House, but more of the beasts are entering in from the back, Rand bursts out and yells to Tam that they are coming in from both sides of the house. Rand runs to the forest hearing the sounds of battle before he hears Tam burst out of a window as well, heading in another direction to pull the attackers away from Rand.

Having grown up in this forest Rand traverses it easily, though the Darkness is taking on a new foreboding with the Dark Rider and now Nightmare Beasts appearing. Soon Tam finds Rand and explains that the attackers are Trollocs, beasts that serve The Dark One. Tam suggests the pair sleep out in the forest, saying that the night is warming. This sets Rand to check Tam for fever because the night is still very cold.

Tam has a fever and a cut along his side, not a deep one nor a bad one but Tam is still very weak and hot to the touch. Rand decides to go to the House to get the Wagon, Bela and what little medical supplies they have.

He takes Tam’s sword and heads back to the house, which is empty of living Trollocs, but several dead ones litter the floor, along with almost everything in the house. Well except one Trolloc who apparently mains Hunter in World of Warcraft cause he has feign death as a skill.

The Trolloc (named Narg) tells Rand that the “Myrddraal wants to speak with him(Rand)” and charges at Rand..who manages to get Tam’s sword up as the Trolloc slams into him and kills the Shadowspawn. (Rand -1 : Tam like – 4)

Rand gathers the supplies he needs and heads to the barn to get the cart and Bela, Bela is gone and the Sheep have been slaughtered. Rand creates plan B, and hacks off the handles of the Cart intending to use them to make a liter for Tam to drag him to Emon’s Field. Once finished he notices that Tam’s sword had not been dulled at all by chopping through the thick cart handles.

With supplies in Tow Rand heads back to the forest to help Tam.

My Thoughts

The plot has Officially begun.

I like seeing a little bit of what Rand’s normal life is before the Trollocs attack, and I love the teasing of Tam’s history.

A poster earlier in the thread mentioned that they were sad that Tam’s full backstory was never really explored deeply. I think it helps the overall story that Tam’s full history is never really revealed in secondary materials.

The majority of Tam’s screen time is done through the point of view of Rand and Perrin, both of whom look up to Tam as..not exactly a Hero (well Rand does) but as someone very reliable and sturdy. We find out almost everything about Tam from contextual things about the setting.

I am going to spoiler this bit because it is talking about future things but I kind of want to discuss why I think Tam works.

We find out from Lan that the Heron is a Blade-master's mark.
We find out from Moraine and Siuan that Tam joined the army of Illian, which is implied to be an important place because the Horn of Valere is meant to go there.
We find out after Rand conquers Illian that the 100 Companions are the elite squad of Illian.

I think a danger of doing a prequel about Tam would be that he would end up coming across as a bit of a Mary Sue, seeing him from Rand and Perrin’s POV means that Tam being an absolute badass is natural.

Of course he would be a Blade-Master that was in the Elite Illian Guard, he is Tam Al’thor...if anyone is that bad ass it is Rand’s father. The Emon’s Field kids all discussed how they imagined going outside the Two Rivers..well Tam did that and survived to come back, and seeing Tam through the POV character’s eyes also just lets us kind of bake “Knows everything and can do anything” into our knowledge pool because the characters kind of already think that.

Sorry to derail with things that aren’t quite relevant yet. I just really like Tam as a character.

Anyways, the fact we view Tam as an absolute badass sells the Trollocs as a real danger here, after all they managed to put the invicinible Tam Al’Thor down.

Rand’s thoughts as he runs away really set up how brave it is for him to go back to the house later, Rand is scared to all hell, but as soon as it is for someone he cares about Rand is instantly willing to risk running into the beasts he was running from not to long ago.

The reveal of Tam’s wound is really slick too.

Tam: “We can stay out the night...at least it is getting warmer”
Rand’s inner thoughts: “Light it’s cold, I wish I had my clo...wait a second what did he just say?”

The Trollocs killed the Sheep! Poor Sheepies they legitimately Didndu nothing to deserve being killed. Sheep are an underrated animal, just look at one...its so fuzzy and has exactly zero IQ points in that head.

We get our only directly speaking Trolloc in the series, which is kind of just an excuse to sell how dangerous a Myrddraal is, The Trollocs could hurt Tam who is unfazed by Bears and Wolves..and Trollocs fear Myrddraal, it is a very tidy and clean way to tell us that Trollocs are bad..Myrddraal are catastrophic to run into.

We get shades of..how Rand’s Two Rivers raising interacts with Rand’s Aiel blood stubbornness, even when faced with no cart, no Bela...he just jumps to Plan B.

Chapter 6: The Westwood.

Summary

Rand checks Tam for wounds that would cause the fever but Tam only has a single cut the size of Rand’s palm. Rand tends to the wound and prepares the to pull Tam, who is murmuring about Kari, his dead wife.

Rand drags the litter through the forest, avoiding the road for fear of running into Trollocs or the Black Cloaked rider, which was a valid fear as part way through the night a squad of Trollocs marches down the road from the east, heading towards the farm. At their head is the Myrddraal. Rand hides hoping that he is deep enough in the forest and the monsters move on.

Rand prepares to start moving again but something tells him to stay in place, and moments later the Myrddraal returns without the Trollocs, it’s black horse silent as death, it stops every few feet and checks the forest and passes by Rand and Tam again.

Rand starts to move again, and Tam begins to mutter again. Speaking about a group of (((THEM))) coming over the Dragonwall, about a war that brought all the great nations together, about a place called Cairhein, and burning towers. He speaks of a King who cut down a tree called Avendoraldera and a war which caused the Nations of the continent to unite against a common enemy that had slaughtered their way to the Shining Walls.

Tam speaks of the aftermath of the battle, climbing a mountainside to escape the stench of death and finding a dead warrior woman, and a child almost frozen to death, and how He and Kari are going to name it Rand.

The Revelation shakes Rand to his core, but Rand doesn’t have time to deal with this, because he has to continue onto Emon’s Field or Tam will die.

Commentary

This is one of my favorite chapters in the book. There are 3 chapters that are effectively completely non action that I think are the 3 best in the book. we get to see some of what I was talking about with Rand’s view of Tam as badass, he considered Tam invincible until tonight, then we get the fun of Rand basically being a one man show this entire chapter, Rand is basically completely on his own in a life or death situation for the first time in his life.

We get another hint of Myrddraal’s ability to scare people with just a stare.

We also get Tam’s fever dreams, giving us an idea of how the Aiel War went, of just how one sided it was in favor of the Aiel and how it started, and we learn that Rand is adopted which begins one of Rand’s core story themes.

“What happens when you take someone and slice away everything that they were rooted to with nothing to replace it.”

This is one of my favorite reveals in all of fiction just for how it is done, Jordan puts Rand in an absolutely desperate situation and then while he is Hungry, Cold and Tired takes a metaphorical crowbar to Rand’s entire world.

Also my audio book version of this chapter is 18 Minutes.
18 Minutes.

Consider all the stupid shows in the past 20 years that spend hours and hours fucking around and doing nothing and this Chapter is 18 minutes long and accomplishes more than those show do in entire seasons.

I am not sure this is..really fair.

Like, sure Trollocs stop being a problem for most of our main cast who are epic level DND characters Artifact tier weapons, but even Lan* and Tam who are basically the most badass characters without Channeling or Ta'veren nature in the setting prefer to fight Trollocs with Lance and Bow and go to sword as a last resort.

*Remember for the record, in Book 14 a tired Lan is ambushed by 3 Myydraal at the same time and wins and he still would rather fight Trollocs on Horseback with a Lance as much as he can.

The Trolloc (named Narg) tells Rand that the “Myrddraal wants to speak with him(Rand)” and charges at Rand..who manages to get Tam’s sword up as the Trolloc slams into him and kills the Shadowspawn. (Rand -1 : Tam like – 4)
I do recall Lan being surprised that a trolloc spoke with Rand. Maybe he didn't know trollocs could speak.

There was at one point in the 90s an offer to do the first three books as an anime. But Jordan didn't know enough about it and said no. I do think the only way to properly adapt WoT is through animation. It's too big and too long to do live action. But a studio churning out episodes over a decade could do it.
This still blows my mind because he wrote a story with three clueless harem protagonists and a world of tsunderes.

Nah, none of them are really outright clueless except Rand about Min, most of Rand and Mats issues come from cultural differences and Faile is just a cuntbag.

Tam not getting any pov chapters in new spring is still my biggest complaint about the prequel since Jordan's original idea for WoT was to have someone already experienced with how the world works as the chosen hero and there's a lot that could of been expended on mentioned in the main series, but no its about 70% Moraine, 25% Lan, and maybe 5% Siuan.
New Spring was supposed to kick off a series of shorter books that was related to but not directly part of the WoT series narrative. It apparently didn't sell to expectations and Jordan was by then starting to get sick. It was only at that point that it became the main series prequel, the idea for other books dropped, and so on. I think this part is all reasonably documented.

But, all of the above is a long-winded way to lead me to speculate a Tam centric story might have been in the back of Jordan's mind as one of these "other" books, but we never got it, based on the above. None of which I've ever seen a shred of evidence for, but, eh, it seems as reasonable a guess as anything else.

I always felt that the trollocs were a threat throughout the series, just as you said not to the main characters. For most people up until the events of the series the trollocs hadn't been seen in generations outside the borderlands. So imagine you're some asshole with a spear and now you have to face down a charge from 7 foot tall animal headed monsters. It would be terrifying, but after winning a few battles you'd almost get used to it. But you'd still take them seriously as a threat.

I believe that Jordan's early pitch was the Dragon already being an old man. I think a lot of Tam is what is left over of that initial idea.

to be fair iirc Tam spent a little over 20 years outside the two rivers and fought through 4 wars before coming back with Kari and a baby Rand so all his achievements seem natural for someone to survive so much, Plus I think it was either in crossroads or a later book the couple had to suffer a fair bit because the pattern had to make sure Rand ended up in Emon's field with Kari's parent's completely disowning the two and are never mention again outside of that as well as the couple having to grieve 2 or 3 stillborns with the last one making it impossible for Kari to have anymore children due to some complications.

Nah, none of them are really outright clueless except Rand about Min, most of Rand and Mats issues come from cultural differences and Faile is just a cuntbag.
I meant more along the lines of how through the whole series each of them thinks the other two know what they're doing and then when they get back together in the final they all realize none of them know what they are doing.

I don't really think they do that at the end, from what I remember of Rand's last conversation with Women about Perrin it was mostly Rand getting the story about how Perrin and Faile fell down the stairs and Egwene's mother catching Faile on top of him without context, and the "I wish X were here, he knows about Women" happens less and less as the series goes and the Boys (save Mat who is already a casanova) get more confidant.

I don't think Rand and Mat ever really..talked about chicks later on in the books. Mat just played peace keeper between Rand and Tuon.

Chapter 7 Out of the Woods

Dawn comes as Rand finally exits the Westwood to find Emond’s Field devastated. Half the Village has been burnt to the ground, and Rand remembers the platoon of Trollocs coming from the east.

Haral Luhhan quickly meets Rand at the entrance to the Village and helps Rand take Tam to Nyneave who quickly declares that Tam is beyond saving and goes back to help tend to the wounded that she can actually help with.

Rand takes Tam to Bran and after some discussion Bran (after some subtle manipulations by Thom) brings up that Moraine is an Aes Sedai one of the feared users of the One Power, who had helped fight off the Trollocs last night with Lan who is her Warder.

Commentary

Not much to say about this chapter, the Trollocs coming from the east set up that Emond’s Field got attacked in the previous chapter, basically the chapter is giving Nyneave the chance to triage Tam and say he is beyond saving.

The thing to note however is how Thom sets Bran up to bring up going to Moraine, it is pretty subtle foreshadowing to what Thom really is, and this one I think is actually foreshadowing. There will be something I will bring up in a couple of chapters that I am not sure is actual Foreshadowing or just Jordan being absurdly lucky with things that even if happened purely by accident are slick bits.

Chapter 8: A Place of Safety

Summary

Rand goes to fetch Moraine to heal Tam, who does so. During and After the healing Moraine and Lan deliver some exposition

The Heron Mark on Tam’s sword is the sign of a Blademaster.

Trolloc and Myrddraal swords are forged in a way that can give them the ability to infect the victim with wounds that will kill even if they are shallow.

The Trollocs only attacked certain places, ones associated with Rand’s best friends who are close to age to him, which means that Rand, Perrin and Mat are known to the Dark One..and The Dark One wants them dead, which means the 3 have to leave lest the Trollocs return in greater numbers.

Moraine and Lan exit and Marin Al’Vere enters with some food. She suggests Rand gets some sleep and drink some broth. Once alone with his father Rand pulls a chair up to his father’s bed..and quickly falls asleep.

Commentary

Not much to comment about in this chapter, we are kind of in the low point of action after the first major dramatic piece and before the really big one of this part of the book.

Chapter 9: Tellings of the Wheel

Rand runs through a cold wasteland, running from attackers, the only thing keeping the roiling hot sun from burning him to a crisp are the silver and black clouds that cover the sky and keep out all warmth. In the distance he sees a mountain rising in the distance, a mountain he knows and a voice calls to him, a voice he also knows, demanding that he serve.

He rages at the Dark One for a moment and curses Shai’tan directly, a face appears to him and hands reach out to him, the owner of the face calling Rand to serve him. Rand throws himself off a nearby cliff.

He is outside of a city..a grand city on an island, a sanctuary with bridges of pure white. Rand runs to the city..however no matter how fast he runs the City gets farther away. Rand trips and falls knowing that the Face and the Trollocs that hunt him will catch him.

Then he lands face first into paving stones, he is on one of the pure white bridges, he goes into the wondrous city, with a massive spire a White Tower. He tries to explore the tower but no matter where he goes The Tower lies before him. The people of the City look as if all their hopes have been broken..until he begins to go towards the tower. Then the people begin to sing celebrating that he is going to where he must go.

Rand is awash in celebrations, being borne along on a crest of cheering people..he enters the White Tower and inside..is a Myrddraal.

Rand awakens, the sword hit jabbing him in the ribs and Tam apparently asleep. Rand gets some food that had been left for him by Mistress Al’vere. He goes to check on Tam..who is actually awake, but weak and not able to sit up.

The pair talk about the events of last night, and why Moraine healed him and what Moraine said, and Tam drops a bomb. He believes Moraine because Aes Sedai will never tell and outright lie.

Lan barges in and tells Rand there is trouble, Rand and Tam say goodbye and Lan pulls Rand downstairs, with Mat.

The 3 look outside the Inn and see a mob surrounding Moraine, they demand she leave the village blaming the attack on her, including threatening to burn down the Inn, to which the Mayor takes a very large amount of offense (given he and his family live in the third floor he has good right to).

Bran and Haral attempt to disperse the crowd with shame and some threats..until Moraine speaks up.

((I am going to paraphrase from the book for this section because this is one of my favorite bits in the entire series))

“Is this what Emond’s blood has come to, little people squabbling for the right to hide like rabbits, you have forgotten who you were, forgotten what you were, but I had hoped that some small part was left, some memory in blood and bone, some shred left to steel you for the long night to come. To the south lies what you call the white river..but far to the east people still call it by it’s rightful name Manetherendrelle in the old tongue Waters of the Mountain Home, sparkling waters that once coursed through a land of bravery and beauty 2000 years ago Manetherendrelle flowed by the walls of a mountain city so lovely to behold that Ogier stone masons came to stare in wonder. Farms and Villages covered this region and what you call the Forest of Shadows and beyond, but it’s people thought themselves people of the Mountain Home, the people of Manetheran.

Their king was Aemon’Al’Caar’Al’Thorin Aemond son of Caar son of Thorin and Eldrene ay Ellan ay Carla was his queen. Aemond a man so fearless that the greatest compliment that one could give for courage even among his enemies was to say a man had “Aemon’s heart” Eldrene so beautiful that it was said that the flowers bloom just to make her smile. Bravery and Beauty and Wisdom, and a love that death could sunder. Weep if you have a heart for the loss of them, for the loss of even their memory. Weep for the loss of their blood.

For nearly two centuries the Trolloc Wars had ravaged the length and breathed of the world, and wherever battles raged, the red eagle banner was in the forefront. The Men of Manetheran were a thorn to the Dark One’s foot and a bramble to his hand. Sing of Manetheran who would never bend knee, Sing of Manetheran the sword that could not be broken. They were far away the Men of Manetheran, on the field of Beccar called the field of blood, when news came that a Trolloc army was moving against their home.

To far to do else to wait for hear of their lands death, for the forces of the Dark One meant to make and end to them, kill the mighty Oak by hacking away it’s roots, to far away to do else but mourn, but they were the Men of the Mountain Home.

Without hesitation without thought for the distance they must travel they marched from the very field of victory, still covered by dust and sweat and blood. Day and Night they marched for they had seen the horror a Trolloc army left behind it and no man of them could sleep while such a danger threatened Manetheran. They moved as if their feet had wings, marching further and faster than friends hoped or enemies feared they could.

At any other day that march alone would inspire songs. When the Dark One’s armies swooped down upon the lands of Manetheran the men of the mountain home stood before it with their backs to the Tarendrelle.

The host that faced the men of Manetheran was enough to daunt the bravest heart. Ravens blackened the sky, Trollocs blackened the land. Trollocs and their Human Allies, Trollocs and Dark Friends in tens of tens of thousands, with Dreadlords to command. At night their cook fires out numbered the stars and dawn revealed the Banner of Ba’alzamon, Ba’alzamon “heart of the dark” and Ancient name for the Father of Lies.

The Dark One could not have been free of his prison at Shayol Ghul, for if he had been not all of the forces of humankind together could stand against him, but there was power there. Dreadlords and some evil that made that made that light destroying banner seem no more than right and sent a chill into the souls of the men who faced it.

Yet they knew what they must do. Their homeland lay just across the river. They must keep that host and the power with it from the Mountain Home. Aemon had sent out messengers aid was promised if they could just hold for three days at the Tarendrelle, hold for three days against odds that should overwhelm them in the first hour.

Yet somehow, through bloody assault and desperate defense they held through and hour, and the second hour and the third. For three days they fought and though the land became a butchers yard no crossing of the Tarendrelle did they yield.

By the third night no help had come, and no messengers and they fought on alone. For six days, For Nine..and on the Tenth day Aemon had known the bitter taste of betrayal. No Help was coming and they could hold the river crossings no more.

Aemon crossed the Tarendrelle, destroying the bridges behind him. He sent word throughout his land for the people to flee, for he knew the powers with the Trolloc horde would find a way to bring it across the river. Even as the word went out the Trolloc crossing began and the soldiers of Manetheran took up the fight again, to buy what with their lives hours they could for the people to escape.

From the city of Manetheran Eldrene organized the flight of her people into the deepest forests and the vastness of the mountains, but some did not flee. First in a trickle then in a River then a Flood men went not to safety but to join the army fighting for their land.

Shepards with Bows, Farmers with Pitchforks, Woodsman with Axes. Women went too shouldering what weapons they could they find and marching side by side. No one made that journey who did not know they would never return, but it was their land. It was their father’s and it would be their children's and they went to paid the price of it.

Not a step of ground was given until it was soaked in blood, but at the last the army of Manetheran was driven back, back to here. To this place you now call Emond’s Field and here the Trolloc hordes surrounded them.

Trolloc dead and the corpses of human renegades piled up in mounds, but always more would crawl over those charnel heaps in waves of death that had no end. There could be but one finish, no man or woman who had stood beneath the Banner of the Red Eagle at that day’s dawning still lived when night fell. The sword that could not be broken was shattered.

In the mountains of mist alone in the emptied city of Manetheran, Eldrene felt Aemon die and her heart died with him, and were her heart had been was left only a thirst for vengeance, vengeance for her love, vengeance for her people. Driven by grief she reached out to the true source and hurled the One Power at the Trolloc Army and there the Dreadlords died wherever they stood, whether in their secret councils or exhorting their soldiers. In the passing of the breath the Dreadlords and the Generals of the Dark Lord’s host burst into to flames.

Fire consumed their bodies and terror consumed their just victorious army. Now they ran like beasts before a wildfire in the forest with no thought for anything but escape. North and South they fled, Thousands drowned attempting to cross the Tarendrelle without the Dreadlords to help them cross and at the Manetherendrelle they tore down the bridges at their fright at what might be following them.

Where they found people they slew and burned, but to flee was the need that gripped them. Until at last no one of them remained in the lands of Manetheran. They were disbursed like dust before the whirlwind. The final vengeance came more slowly, but it came when they were hunted down by other peoples, by other armies in other lands. None was left alive of those who did murder at Emond’s Field.

But the price was high for Manetheran, Eldrene drawn to herself more of the One Power than any human could ever hope wield un-aided and as the enemy generals died so did she die, and the fires that consumed her also consumed the empty city of Manetheran even the stones of it, down to the living rock of the mountains.

Yet the people had been saved, nothing was left of their farms, their villages or their great city. Some would say there was nothing left for them, nothing left but to flee to other lands and begin anew. They did not say so. They had paid such a price in blood and hope for their land as has never been paid before and now they were bound to that land in ties stronger than steel.

Other wars would wrack them in the years to come, until at last corner of their world was forgotten, and at last they forgot wars and the ways of war. Never again did Manetheran rise, it’s soaring spires and splashing fountains became as a dream that slowly faded from the minds of it’s people, but they and their children, and their children’s children held the land that was theirs.

They held it when the long centuries erased the why of it from their memories, they held it until today there is you.

Weep for Manetheran, Weep for what is lost forever.

Commentary

This is probably my favorite chapter in the book, I think I have discussed how much I love Moraine’s history of the fall of Manetheran back in the season 1 postings but I have to reiterate that it is one of my favorite sections in the series.

The Wheel of Time world during the time we are seeing it is a Civilization in deep decline, it isn’t just the Age of Legends that has passed in the time since The Dragon died, but other High Ages have come and gone for humanity.

It also sets up that “Of course the Two River’s folk are badass, they have been Isolated for a thousand years” Almost everything they have is a function of things they make or grow. If a disaster happens they have to rebuild themselves, if wolves or bears attack the Sheep and Cows they have to defend their animals.

The most interesting thing for me is that since this time I am listening a little more closely than normally, the dream sequence kind of stood out as well. We see that Ba'alzamon is trying to keep Rand isolated from Aes Sedai from the first moment that he could and it has some very evocative imagery.

Like a very sharp cliff that would be death to even try to climb down.

Haral Luhhan quickly meets Rand at the entrance to the Village and helps Rand take Tam to Nyneave who quickly declares that Tam is beyond saving and goes back to help tend to the wounded that she can actually help with.
This section always bothered me, because I can't think of any good reason why Nynaeve wouldn't suggest Rand talk to Moiraine. I can think of several bad reasons (like "Better your dad die than ask help from an Aes Sedai"), but not a good one.

Remember at this point Nyneave despises Moraine and has yet to undergo the great humbling she gets in Book 5. Early Series Nyneave is a walking insecurity factory.

Chapter 10: Leave Taking

Rand, Mat and Lan meet Perrin in the stables of the Winespring Inn, Lan inspects the horses while the Main Trio Talk about the situation they are in. Moraine enters and declares it is time to go causing both Egwene and Thom to come from hiding spots to voice their desires to join.

Thom gives us this wonderful line about Lan’s sword.

“There is no need for that, I am not a cheese for slicing”

In this read through, Thom Merrilin will be played by Joshua Moon.

With the Bard having joined in we have a proper DnD party going (except Egwene who atm is a Civilian and will die if a Cat attacks her) the group exit the village going through the Winespring river to hide their tracks until they are on the road, as they begin their trip Rand looks at the skyline of Emon’s Field trying to impress it upon his mind, homesick even before he had left the village.

Then he sees a black shape fly across the moon, too large to be a bat. Lan comes back to see why he stopped..and declares that the creature is a Draghkar, which Thom describes as a creature “Worse than even Trollocs and Fades”

Commentary

First I wanna give special mention to Haral Luhhan’s wife Alsbet who apparently Mat overheard saying “I hope the Trollocs come back, I wanna get my hands on them for burning down my house” Some will say that Wheel of Time is woke, but come on you have to admit it is cool that you hear about the Two Rivers Folk are so stubborn that even the Womenfolk are like “Them Goat Faced wankers cheap shotted us by attacking us when we were all getting drunk for the holiday, If they come at us when it’s fair we will kick their fucking asses.”

Mat, Perrin and Rand poking fun at each other for their weapons is very much young adult and in character for them.

Moraine being willing to allow Thom and Egwene to join in makes a lot of sense given that she is likely being swayed by some Tav’eren twisting of fate. Thom and Egwene both end up pretty important to the forces of the Light by the end of the series.

One thing I am noticing this time around is how Lan is being differently portrayed here. Lan here has a real angry streak going. I am not sure if it is just the stress of this mission but Lan will show open hostility later on that is quite uncharacteristic of Lan later on in this book and subsequent books.

I also think it is kind of strange that we get so many Shadowspawn thrown at us all at once early and not much later on, by Book 3 aside from The Gholum we basically have all the ones that show up don’t we?

Chapter 11: The Road to Tarren Ferry

The Fellowship of the Braid Tug gallop at full speed the Draghkar following them in the air, pushing their horses to the absolute limit, about half way through the evening Moraine has the group stop and uses the one power to refresh the horses mental state. The one power can be used to remove exhaustion but at the cost of it coming back twice as hard later.

Moraine mentions that Bella is a much stronger steed than she looks at first glance managing to keep up with the other horses with relative ease and the group continues on. Soon a dense fog begins to envelop the group, thick enough to completely obscure Rand’s vision of any members of the Party that aren’t directly in front of or behind him.

Commentary

There isn’t much going on here, the group is hauling ass like the Feds are after them for Tax Evasion. There are lots of really good descriptions of what Rand is thinking, and this spot has a great bit of foreshadowing for something that we can talk about later.

Chapter 12: Across the Taren

After what seems like an eternity traveling in the cold foggy night Lan calls for the group to stop, for they have arrived at Taren Ferry, where the Ferry across the river was built. Lan hires the ferry despite it being the middle of the night with a handful of gold. Lan leads the group to the Ferry dock and has Rand and Perrin display their weapons, while displaying his own. Thom picks up on the mood and begins to trim his fingernails with his knives.

The Arms Crossed Under Breasts Guild is taken across the River and now the Two River’s folk are now properly away from home...and the first thing that happens is that Moraine sinks the Ferry to prevent it from being used, which gets us the fantastic description of a Ferry sinking in fog that is almost impossible to see through except for the 4 torches on it’s for corners spinning around and slowly sinking.

We find out that Moraine put a Fog Bank on the river to distract the Draghkar by making it follow the fog thinking perhaps that the group used the Ferry to go down the river.

Lan leads the party to a site that he had scouted and prepared in the event they needed to hide, the humans get some feed as do the Horses, meanwhile Moraine and Egwene speak about the one power and that Egwene will channel regardless if she wants to or not and Moraine guides Egwene in the first use of her abilities by making the small blue stone that Moraine wears on her forehead glow, Egwene ends the chapter declaring she is going to be Aes Sedai.

Commentary.

Good job Moraine, I am sure that sinking someone’s means of living...actually how does this guy make a living? given that travelers to the Two Rivers are kind of rare running the Ferry can’t exactly be lucrative..is this guy just charging everyone that crosses an absurd amount?

You know what Hightower deserved it Moraine did nothing wrong!

Moraine allowing Egwene come along makes sense now given that Egwene will touch the source anyways and Moraine can sense that.

Chapter 13: Choices.

The group continue northwards with a few various minor events along the way.

Rand and Egwene get into a fight and Rand calls Moraine a Dark Friend by implication.

Lan begins to train the boys in the weapons they have.

Thom begins to show the boys a bit of Gleeman stuff like Juggling

Moraine and Egwene talk in seclusion every night.

Moraine gets pissed at Mat and tells them that she will kill the boys before she lets the Dark One have them because she in direct words “Opposes what the Dark one wants”

After about a week of travel The Group arrive at the (((CITY))) of Baerlon and enter despite the gates being closed at night due to Lan bribing the shit out of the gate guard.

Lan and Moraine also finesse the guard into giving updated news, which is that White Cloaks are in Baerlon and that the False Dragon named Logain has won his battle against the Aes Sedai and is heading to Tear to claim the Sword that can not be touched, which Thom explains is one of the major signs the person claiming to be The Dragon Reborn is the true one and not just a pretender.

Commentary

We get lots of interesting little tidbits here and one thing I want to discuss that isn’t exactly spoilers but does cover later books.

Lan begins teaching the boys about their weapons, which is like shocking in this day and age..imagine having your Main characters actually be learning things on screen and not just instantly being the most awesome at everything ever without even trying.

Thom shows Mat and Rand how to do some juggling which sets up a few things for later on in this Book and the next few that come

Then we get to Moraine and Egwene, now I don’t have much so say about the actual events that happen here. I don’t hate Egwene like other people do (mostly) but there is one thing I want to bring up.

When Moraine and Egwene are talking about the 5 Types of Flows in the Power, Fire, Water, Wind, Earth and Spirit, Moraine explains that Men are better at Fire and Earth and Women are better at Wind and Water.

I think this is absolute fucking bullshit, there is absolutely nothing that directly shows us that on average any gender is better at using one of the powers than any other. Outside of the insane bullshit that happens with using Sa’Angreal like the Chodean Kal...Egwene has the best example of a high end Earth Spell in the last book when she creates a lightning rod from random Iron in the ground.

Now I am fine with this because Magic, but no Man replicates anything like that, Egwene legitimately forges a Steel Spike in under a second and the thing most male Channelers do is “make explode holes”

Meanwhile a Man makes a Tornado without much effort and while we see similar things with the Seafolk Windfinders..I would call Windfinders absolute specialists who focus on one type of weave.

We also get some more exposition about the False Dragon in a way that is pretty natural. Given that it takes a week of Travel give or take to get Baerlon we can assume that Lan and Moraine took around that time so its been half a Month since Lan and Moraine left the city, and works as great set up for Book 3 when the Stone of Tear and the Sword that can not be touched becomes important, we also get reinforced on the fact that Aes Sedai and Warders handle things in the most simple way possible.

Lots of Cash in the right hands.

Yeah..yeah.

It gets bad enough that one of the Black Ajah is the most competent and helpful Aes Sedai in the story.

Bad example.

Nothing we ever see backs up what Moraine says about Fire/Water/Wind/Earth being split in terms of power for men and women. Aes Sedai are very clearly shown to not know as much as they think they do, and none of the other major channeling factions including the Forsaken bring it up.

Every Single Modern Female Channeler we see almost entirely use Fire and Earth for offensive weaves and we know that Air can be used as a weapon with Clubs of Air and Cutting things with air so why would you use the elements you are weakest in as your primary way of offense? It just doesn't make sense especially for people like the Seanchan who have a thousand years of using Channelers almost purely as weapons.

I just think it is a funny bit that Moraine brings it up, has to believe it because of the first Oath and it is never brought up again or is remotely relevant.

@Honka Honka Burning Love
Please continue your series.
I lurk here and I read it every time, and I believe others do.
So, even if we don't show it, we appreciate it and I wanted to write this post to put that into words.
I plan on it, and thanks. Some chapters are just kind of dense occasionally and I generally just spend time on this while eating my Breakfast.

My Delicious Breakfast with Sausage and Eggs and Coffee that I enjoy every morning unlike our Dear Sneeder who fears American Food and eats Yogurt instead.
