Mega Rad Gun Thread

the best thing you can do for any assailant is give them information about you. shows of force work as a deterrent until it doesn't and then you're just telling a potential shooter that you are a primary target. They also work best when they are choreographed well in advance. Open carry by nature does not do that.
it is known for a fact that shooters have skipped over venues before because they have publically announced somewhere that they have armed security (the Pooner shooter in Tennessee comes to mind for me), but would you count on a shooter, or robber, or general assailant to chicken out at the last second when they've already fully committed to going there in-person, just because they saw someone with a gun? I can't say for sure, but I personally wouldn't.

What is so bad about open carry? Is it this idea that you'll be targeted first if the balloon goes up?

Maybe if your cause and effect is reversed, a potential spree shooter would see someone open carrying and decide not to.

The way I look at it, I would always rather be less noticeable than stick out. So even though open carry is more convenient, I never do it, even hiking I use a cover garment if possible. Deterrents don't work all that well in my experience. I'm a big guy (for you), that's a deterrent. It didn't stop me from getting jumped in public school or robbed in college. They may have even targeted me because they had something to prove. I don't need the general public, a random karen, an uppity nignog, anyone, noticing me any more than they already do.

Well, a .38 Special, 158 grain LRN going 750ish fps will absolutely kill someone, so I would imagine something a bit weaker would kill someone too. A lot of old black powder handguns were on par with the power of the round being discussed, and they would definitely kill someone if utilized properly. The main issue with lighter rounds is that you increase the energy, but decrease the momentum, and also reduce the amount of time they are under pressure in the barrel. There's a lot of variables involved in projectile performance, and maybe their testing determined that was the "sweet spot" for what they were going for.
.38 special is a solid round by all metrics btw. Even from a snubbie, it's still heavy and has good terminal ballistics. From a 4 inch barrel it is a 9mm in power. Use something like the FBI load that Remington still makes, and you have a potent self defense weapon. Reminder that revolvers are cheap as fuck on the used market and (you) should have one, if for no other reason because they are fun

Open carrying scaring off potential attackers is the same kind of fudd nonsense as racking a shotgun scaring off home intruders.
I remember reading some Slav's blog website page where he went over what it was like living through the collapse of the USSR and the Balkans. basically If people want to kill you and take your shit, they will so don't stand out.

Finally found a good range for my guns.

Only +p loadings approach 9mm in performance and only from a longer barrel. Most snubbies have a 2” barrel.

None of this matters because all pistols suck at terminal performance and shot placement or sheer number of wounds is what it will take to stop a determined threat.

Eh. A lot of 38 loads anymore hit the gel test penetration minimum even from a 2 inch. Yes they are +p. Thats what those defensive loads are for, defense. It's been kicking for over 100 years with success. Yeah its not as good as a rifle, no shit, but it's reliable just by how long it's been around and how many police used it and still use it in certain countries.

What is a good, general purpose silencer for 556 to get on Black Friday to pick up on Jan 1st? Probably not going to put it on a SBR or dip into 300 Blackout.

There's a kind Grandfather at our Church who might be a deacon but definitely is involved with everything that open carries a full sized glock everywhere. I've seen him at funerals and weddings in the sound booth with his glock. Now I also was carrying at these occasions so I'm not knocking the plan but mine was concealed.

IMO Some people just want to pack a gun on their hip and while there's nothing wrong with it I wouldn't unless I'm checking fence.

I don't personally have a problem with open carry but it's not something I practice.
I usually tote a pocket piece.
On the occasion that I have something larger I go OWB with a long shirt or a jacket of some sort.
IWB is just uncomfortable for me, and I have tried often.
I don't consider using a cover garment open carry but I'm very aware when I have to stretch up for something or bend over.

Pretty much anything from Huxwrx, SilencerCo, Surefire, DeadAir, and Energetic Armaments will be good to go. Also B&T. I'm really looking hard at the DeadAir Lazarus for when I get a 5.56mm can since it is low back pressure, and my 5.56mm rifle is an AUG, which are notoriously bad hosts with older style suppressors with normal baffle designs that don't reduce back pressure. I would take a look at Silencer Shop's website, see what's available, see what features you want, and look at their prices.

Edit: these days it's really hard to go wrong with any brand of suppressor. Quality cans are the rule these days, not the exception.

There's a time and a place for open carry, just be smart about where youre doing it.

Living somewhere like rural Alaska or the beer run in town while you're at the deer lease. Almost zero civilians have been trained in weapons retention or own level III holsters. Most people do it because they like the idea of attractive negative attention from people they dislike politically. Self-defense isn't the time to be an attention whore.

I may get some shit for this but those shitty nylon holsters are very comfy to carry IWB with, kydex has always been just too stiff for me.

I only like Kydex for a duty/war gear holster. I don't care for them for EDC/concealed carry. For daily carry I'll always go for a quality leather holster. I always get excited when the weather cools down enough for an over shirt or jacket, because then it means I can break out my shoulder rig, which is my all-time favorite way to carry concealed.
