Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

I saw a video recently that said "Miyamoto's brain is probably mashed potatoes at this point", and that video may have been onto something, especially if he keeps saying stupid shit like this.
He's been saying stupid shit for years, though. Famously the reason the GameCube controller has a giant A button was because Miyamoto thinks the best games only need one button (ignoring the fact that even the original Super Mario Bros. required two).

Shit like that is why I always want to slap Nintendo fans who say any other company or dev is arrogant.

The Sega Ages (3DS/Switch) releases were quite baller despite selling the games individually... worth the individual purchase for true blue fans.
They put a ton of effort into each release, especially the 3DS versions where they were rebuilding the games from scratch to be in 3D. Their release of Galaxy Force 2 in 3D is something really special.

Miyamoto on why Nintendo is focusing more on movies:

I’m fully convinced now that Nintendo believes old games poof out of existence when a new system comes out, and that taking down emulators and rom sites is a righteous crusade to maintain the balance of nature. It would explain everything they’re doing.
I've seen Nintendofags elsewhere scream that this is a fake quote that's out of context, but the full context doesn't really make what Miyamoto said any less stupid.

He still claimed that new games make old games obsolete, and that "video content" in contrast endures forever (given the context and wording, I'm not sure if he's talking about movies or just videos of games at their museum, but it's retarded either way). The whole thing is effectively him saying that he wants Nintendo to use its IPs in non-video game contexts to proselytize the Nintendo brand to people. Look at the last sentence, he's pretty much saying he doesn't want kids to think about what games they want to buy, he wants to make it so their parents will simply buy them the newest Nintendo consoles and games because they're Nintendo.

He's basically saying he wants to do this:

Whatever he said was in Japanese and then translated to English, maybe there's some context missing there?

I would read this in the context of what he's said in the past about creating new generations of Nintendo fans, it seems like they want movies to act as a more easily accessible gateway.

Genesis collections in particular used to go all out, like the one on PSP having about 30 games, or the one on 360/PS3 having about 50.
Sega's still pretty on the ball with it to be fair. The set they put out for Switch/Xbox/PS4 has a shitload of games and it's still pretty widely available and playable on modern consoles. The Switch version weirdly has a ton of input lag, though.

More recently, Sonic Origins Plus came with the main 2D series remastered in HD and 12 emulated Game Gear games.

They took down most of their old games including that collection for no reason, the Switch version has audio issues, and Sonic Origins is buggy ass that needed tons of updates and mods just to be almost as good as the fan decomps of the mobile ports and Sonic 3 AIR, to the point where one of Origins’s main devs apologized on launch day for how bad it was since Sega didn’t give them time to fix the bugs.

Yeah, it sucks they delisted it, and I'm not about to defend that, but it's still pretty widely available as a physical release for peanuts.

There's a good rule with Sega games. Wait a year to buy them and a version with all the patches DLC included will be like $20. Everything they push out the door is buggy as fuck on day one.

now im imagining the switch 3 having just one big button on the controller.
I can already see Miyamoto doing a nintendo direct on his death bed saying shit like
"when you press a button, the act of pressing isn't the full story. first you touch it. then you press down into a full press. half press and then release.
that's 4 experiences"
then the direct immediately ends.

It was delisted due to the usual SEGA suicidal stupidity. They didn't want to pay for a perpetual license on the emulator used for it.

SEGA still thinks like the world is on cartridges when it comes to licensing.

I've been debating getting a retroid pocket 5 for emulating everything up to the GameCube/PS2, I do have a legion go running steamos, but it's not really portable (it's fucking huge), would it be worthwhile to get one?

That one is a bit weak for GC/PS2, you can’t really push the settings much.

Then again, rendering above display resolution on a handheld screen is pretty pointless, so it’s not the worst. Just expect some games that really pushed the original hardware not to always run perfectly.

I'm content running games at native resolution if need be, most games from that era don't look right upscaled to begin with.

Honestly, most PS2 games look amazing at higher resolutions.

On a handheld you mostly want to go 2x internal just for clean text and textures, or render to the screen resolution if performance holds up.

Most games in that generation had assets at much higher resolution than the systems could output, and rendering at HD resolutions or higher reveals some really cool details.

If you’re thinking about getting one directly from Retroid, don’t. They just released the G2 which is the exact same thing but more powerful, for the same price. And in a couple months, they’re releasing the Pocket 6 which will be basically the same thing but even more powerful than that, for ten bucks more.

Retroid is weird.

With any emulation handheld, you are only a couple of months from what you bought becoming obsolete, so it is really just down to getting what you think looks like what you want for the price you want to pay today and not sweating future developments.

I have the pocket mini and Gamecube looks and plays fantastic on it. Lightweight Wii U games like New Super Mario Bros. U also run well in Cemu. Wii runs well in Dolphin too. To get the best performance, you have to experiment with different turnip drivers and switch to high performance mode which will give you less battery life.

The colors really pop on the AMOLED screen. Same chipset as the 5, but the Mini has a 4:3 screen and 6 gigs of ram vs 8 gigs.

I tried out Rocknix and Batocera on it, and they're both a little jankey. Rocknix just absoluelty eats the battery and you get maybe an hour and a half of gameplay vs 10+ in Android. I was excited when Batocera was released for it, but the sound didn't even seem to work out of the box. If you get a Retroid 5, you're going to have to stick with Android for the best experience.

One thing is Rocknix does give you Xbox emulation. I tried KOTOR and Fable, and it's painfully close to having full speed emulation. Totally playable but there are some visual glitches and frame hiccups.

Retroid 5/Mini has no issues with doing 2x with most Gamecube games if you tinker with settings and drivers. PS2 varies by game, but I think that's because Gamecube emulation is much further along than PS2. Most PS2 games I have tried ran pretty well, but they were running barebones at 1x.

You'd be surprised. PS1 on Duckstation at 3x looks really good. Very clean looking. I bet PSP looks really nice at 2x or 3x on the 5, but it looks like shit on my mini because it's so tiny on the 4:3 screen.

That explains why goytendo has been trying so hard to suckle at the tit of hollyjew/kosher streaming business model of late. That image makes me more angry than you could possibly imagine. Trust no corporation.
