.308 for sure. .300 is an absolute joke unless you run a very specialized build for a very specialized point of use.
If you go with .300, make sure to label your .300blk mags and store them separately from your 5.56 mags.
IMO 300BBC is cool but it was one of the first cartridges to do the thing it does (Heavy bullet sub sonic) in an AR package and because of that it's not as good at that as other more contemporary cartridges like 338arc and 8.6blackout.
Get a shoulder holster for it and fully embrace the fuddery.
P38/P1 magazines are identical with M1951 other than a modified feed lip for the breachface and a different magazine catch shape/position.
the external belt feed mechanism complicates the bolt and bolt carrier manufacturing as well as makes the disposable portion of the MG significantly more complex and costly than being an empty box of sheet metal. the large external box is far more likely to be damaged by rough handling than an internal mechanism on the MG which is only partially exposed to the elements.
I see your argument but the belt boxes wouldn't need to be disposable, they can be reloaded just like magazines, the OTs-142 even retains its belt after it's been fired in the now empty belt box. And on the URZ belt boxes the only portion of the feed mechanism exposed is the area near the feed lips, but it's a more valid concern with the OTs series of boxes.
Wish i'd known that before I spend $300 on 4 mags for a gun that i spend $200 on. But that is in the past and I don't suppose i can take my money with me to the grave so...
When I go a-rucking I just belt it over the holster anyway. It isn't that uncomfortable - the real downside is that your optics get fucking nasty by the end of it.
If you haven't already, get some Mecgar 18 round magazines. They're just as if not more reliable than the factory Beretta magazines and give you an extra 3 rounds while still being flush fit.
in combat, everything is disposable depending on tempo. a heavy, expensive, complex belt box is not better than a disposable, cheap, simple, disposable belt box. that's the reality of combat. MG's are purposefully designed with positive feeds so that debris ingestion can be ameliorated to a degree and it is easy to clear and keep uptime on the gun because doctrine generally uses volume of fire and achieving and maintaining fire superiority as integral to winning fights.
