I think if you add some decoration and painted them well, Saturnine Terminators can look pretty sick (especially the Dreadnaught):

Some make it work well but yeah I think it would overall look better of they had smaller pauldrons, but I'll take it as is. Fits 40K's over-the-top nature pretty well. I had this design in my head that had made their pauldrons slightly smaller and more shield-like (like a tower or a heater shield) and had them stick further out from the shoulders rather than wrap around it. Hard to explain, but honestly I think the Gorgon pattern is my favorite.

You could also think of it as GW teaching people a lesson to not ask for old weird stuff in an attempt to avoid bringing back the furibundus dread or cobra terminators "here you go, never ask us to do this again".

You do know its a reference to the original designs from 1988? Its supposed to look goofy. Its a marvel they managed to make them look ok.

You have to remember that all the Rogue Trader stuff was hand modeled to play games with and be identifiable on a tabletop over looking immaculate in store front photography:

I know they're based on the older models, but I think the Indomitus/"normal" pattern looks way better. There's nothing wrong with bringing old styles back, but that doesn't mean it always sticks the landing.

Perhaps Saturnite Terminators should combine their might with Centurions and Dreadknights.

My main issue with those chunky models is that they are always some marine transport-adjacent where they go in it with their entire armor to perform things they can do with their usual tools or tactics. A space marine does not need an armor that makes his movement worse just to be able to do something a rhino + breach charges already do, so they always look like some "uhhh we need some more marine big minis". Dreads are great because they actually have some excuse for putting a space marine inside a bulkier and slower armor (that excuse being they literally are going to die if not inside their casket).
 
Does anyone here varnish their models and if so, how do you deal with metallics and chaos trim?

I dont want my AK ultra matt dulling the metallics but Vallejo matte or satin might be a tad too sparkly for my EC.

Usually satin(winsor and newton rattlecan), and then gloss(rarely) or matte(things like capes or other obviously cloth-like items) with a brush where necessary. Satin doesn't give the random highlights from lighting that gloss does, but doesn't dull metallics down into being grey/yellow/brown like matte varnishes will. With the case of trim if you really want to have the trim be a different finish than the rest of the armor and satin overall just isn't good enough, spray your main varnish first, let it actually cure for a day before handling it, and then have fun painting trim again since that's really the only way to do it. You could mask it with silly putty or liquid mask, but that would be even more work.

I was thinking of varnishing, then trim or hoping the vallejo matte or satin 'did the job'.

Have you found cans to work for you? Ive read frosting horror stories hence the airbrush or brush vallejo.

The stuff stinks to high hell and takes a full day to actually cure but I've never had frosting issues with it. That said I've also never had it with AK, Army Painter(haven't used it in years), Testors dullcote(I don't even think this is sold anymore but it was like winsor and newton matte except more available back in the day), Mr. Hobby(which I also use on some models but that shit costs too much to just use on whatever). I've seen the horror stories of frosted paintjobs, and it always looks like someone halfassed shook the can, managed to glob on way too much varnish to the point of it filling details in, sprayed so far back it was dry before it landed... basically all of the things you're not supposed to do with rattlecans.

Something else to remember is that after you've done whatever finish coats you decide to use, you can still go back with your metallics and hit corners and bits of edges for better specular highlights. This works well over satin since the metallic sheen is still visible but only dulled down a bit, and then the metallic paint over the satin in the corners will be slightly brighter for a highlight without needing to try and find a brighter version of that metallic(or resorting to highlighting gold with silver, I fucking hate that... makes it look like worn down gold plated junk jewelry).
 
Inspired by recent posts. My proxy guard test paint jobs. I just need to wash and varnish (and base of course), but I'm half tempted to leave them as is.

I'm torn on what colour to make the guns. Army green, light grey, or dark grey.
Worse picture with better colours on an ugly British window sill.

(The paint on the plasmagunners hand was too watery/fast creating a little pool. Not sure if it's worth correcting. The unpainted shackles on pointing guy are more pronounced in the photo. They tend to look like cuffs, so was considering leaving them unpainted. Also the unpainted zipper on one guy is because I can't get in there, and figured an unpainted zipper was less noticable than a blob of paint. Interested to know if anyone caught those unpainted details before clicking the spoiler. Remember, these will be in squads of 10-20 man squads so maybe they'll get lost among the noise. Not sure if will worth buying a dark skin marker just for the 13% joke, but they're cheap enough, or maybe this dark skin with wood brown is close enough.)

Looks brown enough to me without getting to the point of looking like they just walked out of the deepest jungles of Africa or something.

For the guns, the army green is a good excuse to get another non-neutral color involved and still provide some contrast against the prison jumpsuit orange, and you can still show some wear in the finish with a couple silver highlights on them along some edges or other areas they'd see some handling to show weathering. I'd put black in 2nd, and grey in a distant 3rd.

For the spoiler
No I didn't catch the shackles as they contrasted enough from whatever your primer was that they looked like shackles or handcuffs. And as far as the zipper, a lot of prison jumpsuits have buttons and velcro anyway. So no, didn't notice but if there is enough detail there a wash might help pick it out a little better if you're worried about it.
