Actual activists say "stay home and donate the cash you would have spent getting there." But it's not about caring it's about looking cool.

I think the theory is that you hook the rich spoiled teens into your cause early, and then they grow up to become your big donors, at which point they're actually helping. No clue if the payoff in these cases really counterbalances the wasted resources in practice though.
