'No Stupid Questions' (NSQ) Internet & Technology Edition

Got this notification today, Windows 11, Dell. I've checked that bcmUshUpgradeService.exe is in the correct directory (C/Windows/S32) and that the digital signatures are valid (Broadcom and Windows Hardware) but I've never had this pop up before + i'm increasing para about the quality of windows security now everything is jeetified. Nothing comes up on bitdefender scans either. Legit?

he said they're open box and ran tests on them for a few hours just to make sure they're not defective.
if he can provide evidence of testing them maybe but it from him other than that buy from amazon.

make a backup of your stuff and a snapshot of your pc into an usb stick before restarting pc. better safe than sorry, windown syndrome 11 spooked the shit out of me with AI updates crashing PCs permanently.

doing so now thanks. could it be nefarious (ie bad actor) or just a retarded windows update that breaks everything? might just try to avoid it as long as possible : / had so many issues with windows 11 recently, constantly para of the whole thing shutting off again,

is your PC still in warranty? if not massgrave upgrade your win11 to LTSC, not IoT though because driver fuckery but LTSC only deploys updates after they are sure it's stable since they have been tested by, well, pro and home users :sighduck:

mostly retarded shit knowing dell.

Why don't they put whole ass gigabytes of L3 cache on processors for maximum retard gaming?

I don't care if it would make the die the size of a brick that's fine I can get a bigger cooler just give me that juicy cpu memory
Wouldn't a physically bigger processor result in a slower processor speed because they'd have to slow down oscillation to avoid error states or is there a way around that now? My theoretical knowledge of computer science stops around the mid 1980s.

Has any gaymer with an Nvidia GPU taken the Windows->Linux plunge yet?
How much suffering would I be in with an RTX40xx or is it actually just fine, I'm honestly getting sick of Windows 10 LTS and its updates fucking my shit up.

You's be surprised how well games work on linux now. It used to be a nightmare but ever since Valve started the Steamdeck it's been getting massively better.
In my whole life there has only ever been a single game that I can't get to work right on linux.
You can thank Gaben for his love of linux and hate of microsoft.

Is there a reason why a web browser would suddenly stop working after an update?

Decided to update Ungoogled Chromium from v133 to v147 and now it doesn't want to open except in incognito mode, but if i do anything else besides view web pages, it crashes
  • go to settings, crash
  • manage bookmars, crash
  • check extensions, crash
Thank Christ for LibreWolf's bookmark importer, otherwise I'd be having a really shit day today, but still this shouldn't happen.

This is on a Win10 machine, by the way, they use third party binaries for their install, but I've never had an issue with them until just now. I even restarted the computer and uninstalled/reinstalled Chromium and that didn't do squat.

How are Nvidia drivers on Linux these days? Stable, or buggy?
I agree with @herefortheactualthreads , but also want to add that it's FAR better than it was. I'm not sure what the breakthrough was, but over the past few years my 2080 has been running any game I play, either natively or through steam proton without trouble.

I hear AMD is still more stable, but I haven't noticed anything, if your NVIDIA card model has been out for over 5 years you have some real good chances though.

If my google account is asking me to verify who I am to perform certain account actions, and the only options for that verification are getting a code from the settings app or a push notification on my phone, but my phone has grapheneOS on it now so neither of those things happen no matter how many times I try and it still asks for them if I try to perform those account actions on browser or google app from there, am I fucked

their verification system is so nigger ass they locked me out of my account for weeks because i couldnt verify myself despite making a recovery email and typing in my phone number, and the phone support is just an AI telling you to follow their process on the website.

after not logging in for a couple weeks the same password worked like a miracle. motherfuckers really dislike logging in via VPN.

so yeah you might be semi fucked. if not for youtube, delete your google accounts and switch to another email provider.

Is there an alternative to SyncThing on Android? I just want to sync my password database with my phone. I read about how the old dev for SyncThing stopped support for SyncThing-fork and gave it to some other dev without informing the public. Just seems sketchy overall and wanted a kiwifren to give me something I can use.

I run my own NextCloud instance. You can also rig stuff up with FolderSync, or be a true geek and do similar with Termux.

No stupid questions... I want to switch to Linux but I have windows games and programs that may not run on it. Ive heard that Proton is a compatibility layer Valve put out that can make windows programs run in Linux without having to use WINE

How exactly do I use Proton for tings other than steam games? All ive ever seen is it being a setting in steam for allowing the games to run
Proton is based on Wine.

The Arch Wiki has a good list of third party applications that help with running games and programs.

The easiest way I've found for games is to use Lutris/Heroic Launcher. It will integrate with 3rd party app stores e.g. GoG, EA etc.
Lutris will download a copy of Proton/Wine. You can specific configuration/versions for specific games.
If it is a well known game there is normally an installer script. I was able to install the original Crysis from EA store with Lutris. GoG etc.

The last way if nothing else works. Is to install and configure wine manually. There is this guide which is probably what I followed. There is also the obligatory Arch Wiki guide. Other than the installation, all the configuration information info they have will work on any distro, how I would understand if you or anyone else would find this intimidating. I was able to run the installer for the Revision Mod for Deus Ex (Steam version).
