Blood's actual source code was never released under GPL. It's still proprietary and being sat on by Atari and Warner Bros. to which Nightdive belong to. What we have with NBlood and BloodGDX is reverse engineering using eDuke32 as a base and the leaked Blood alpha build.I'm not even sure that they'd even have to make any modifications to the GPL engines. The content built on top of those engines can still be proprietary. Doom is still proprietary, even though its engine is not. Lots of commercial game releases, including the retroslop discussed in this thread, utilize GZDoom.
Heck, the BFG Edition of Doom 3 still used a heavily modified Id Tech 4 engine, and they released that version of the Id Tech 4 engine to the GPL, as they should. And that was a rerelease/remaster for consoles, even.
You're correct about all the GZslop that we see polluting the Steam library and the disappointment that is the BFG edition.
