This phenomenon in particular deserves its entire own thread. Boomers are all about ego and having to be the one to tell them the truth, YOU have to burden the weight of whatever the stupid scam shit they fell for was. This gets a million times worse when it's your job.
I don't do IT anymore, reason being why is because of shit like this, I moved on to software, but here's an IT horror story from a long time ago. I was working some shitty job at an IT company that supports small businesses. I get a call from one of our dipshit boomer clients. He cheaped out and bought a bunch of shitty prebuilt computers that don't have a graphics card - not really the end of the world, a lot of people make this mistake and you can get the graphics card separately. He needs graphics cards because their shitty software has some basic bitch unnecessary 3D component and it's running at 0.01 FPS without one. I recommend some normal choices, from normal american stores. It'd be $100 a pop which is nothing to them. I get the typical boomer "meh, that's too much for me, kid" response and think nothing of it. Three months pass, then one day I show up to work and there are 5 computers from them in the front along with an angry voicemail.
Dipshit boomer here went to aliexpress and bought the infamous fake nvidia cards. Aliexpress has cut down on this real hard by now, but back then this is just about when the fake graphics card thing was at its height. What they do is make a fake card where it SHOWS UP in Windows but doesn't actually do anything. Yes, you can make a fake circuit board that "says" it does whatever - they still sell fake flash drives that do this and say they have 10 TB etc. For the graphics card, they make some horrible fake plastic heatsink just so that it looks good in the box - yes, the heatsink is plastic, it's supposed to be metal.
Here's where the boomer story gets worse. Most of the graphics cards don't even work at all and the computers won't start. 3 of the 5 computers they gave us, DO boot up, and 2 of them don't. Because "some" of them worked, dipshit boomer here ordered
an entire other set of them hoping that he'd "get lucky" this time. (Remember that even if they "do" start up, it doesn't matter because the graphics cards still don't actually work, the program still runs slow, lul) Now he's up to like $15,000 and waiting months every order when he could have just spent $5,000 and been done with it. He literally tried like 2 or 3 orders without calling us once - that's why there's been radio silence for 3 months.
Now of course, this is all my fault now, because I have to be the one to tell him. We do the normal "BUT IF THE PART EXISTS, IT HAS TO WORK" boomer back and forth. Here's why this story gets MEGA CRINGE real quick: This dipshit boomer was on good terms with the boomer owner of the IT company I'm working for, so now neither will listen to me and now it's MY responsibility to somehow "magically fix the problem". We wasted 2 weeks on back and forth on this and getting called stupid kid etc etc, and getting bugged about it every day, then I came up with an idea.
I took one example of the video cards that didn't boot at all, and one example that did (where it showed it in Windows but it won't really work) and then secretly installed them in two of our "bitch" computers we keep around to test random bullshit. I had to wait another week of getting called kid kid etc until we had some other random part we needed to test go wrong, and another tech needed the bitch PCs. Of course, on one he can't get it to start up at all, and the other one he gets weird graphical glitches. I wait for the boomer owner of our IT company to get involved and then immediately tell the truth and point it out. Both of them ask where the graphics cards came from, since they've never seen one with a shitty fake heatsink before. I tell them everything and how they are scam fake cards and that I had to pull this stunt because he's not fucking listening. Our boomer owner is dead silent.
Suddenly, as if by magic, by the next day, no more bullshit calls from the other company. Since neither would tell me what happened (because boomer ego), a few weeks later I called up the company and asked the receptionist what happened. Everyone there knows me by name now and she says, thank you so much, and explains what happened. The boomer spent 2 days hitting 5 cities and scraped up all the basic graphic cards I recommended 4 months ago, admitting defeat and not ordering them online from an american store because they'd have to wait a week etc. So that's like $20,000 total. The receptionist also tells me the $20,000 isn't very important, what was important was they couldn't do any work for almost 2 months because of the shitty scam graphics cards and the dipshit boomer owner pulled the same "HEH, I BOUGHT THE CARDS THO, IF THEY EXIST, THEN THEY HAVE TO WORK, GO BACK TO YER JERBS" shit with them, then just left and wouldn't come back to the office except once a week, obviously in total panic mode trying to forget about the problem and hoping it would go away but he knows he just fucked over his own business.
She tells me yes they almost went under. Again, you have to understand how dipshit boomers think: They've either paid off their house already and/or they have a shitty 800sqft backup house and/or one way or another they have enough saved up to retire overnight. So when owners get like this, they are literally torching their own company and they don't care, what they DO care about is their FUCKING EGO.
Remember this: This didn't take place in the middle of the office and it's not like I was there and stood up and yelled "LOLZORZ, THIS RETARD BOUGHT THE WRONG SHIT, HEY EVERYONE COME LOOK!". This was in fucking private on literally one phone call. All you had to do was say, well shit, scams exist, fuck third world niggers and, whoops, I'll go fix it. But he KNOWS he fucked up and stayed the course, so it's about his FUCKING EGO of being wrong. Having to buy the right graphics cards would mean a big hit to his EGO so he literally can't do it until they are about to go under, then the panic of going under conceals the ego burn.
Of course, absolutely NO apology from the boomer owner of the IT company I worked for, and he'd NEVER admit that my cunning plan that broke all the rules, was EXACTLY the right move - again, why? It's about EGO and he'd have to admit he was wrong too.
By the way, the receptionist from the other company had everyone there call up the place I work and tell my boomer owner what a good job I did and if it wasn't for me, they would have gone under and all lost their jobs. Any thank you from the boomer owner? Fuck no. It's about EGO.
When you hear the phrase, "more money than sense", now you know. Only boomers do this, I know people outside this age range (both directions, younger and older) that are rich and can retire anytime they want, and they admit when they don't know about something and just pay someone to do it and don't try to get in the way and fuck everything up. It's JUST boomers that do this. It's about EGO.
