Also, can we talk about how the culture war has affected boomers? I know boomers were always typically the political obsessed generation, but prior moving down to Texas my dad was not. I don’t think I ever heard my parents even talk about politics before I was 18.
We move down to Texas and dad starts hanging out with more of the rural Republican folks. It wasn’t too bad at first, especially before 2018/19/20. Around 2020 we started having large neighborhood gatherings in the backyard where a bunch of boomer neighbors would come by for drinks. Politics would always be spat out like 5 minutes in, and any good buzz I would be feeling from my drinks would get ruined because I don’t want to hear about politics while I’m trying to have a good time.
For the past 6-7 years, my dad watches fox from sunrise to sunset. If he doesn’t have it on the tv, he is looking at the app on his phone or some AI cringe slop from our neighbors. Has it on as he’s falling asleep. He’s grouchier, more paranoid, and angrier than what I remember. Doesn’t want to go anywhere unless if it’s god bless America Yankee Doodle dandy land.
Always tells me to worry about things that I can only control, and mentioned to him today that the news he watches is something he can’t control, that he watches it all day and that it isn’t good for him. He denied watching the news all day(despite literally coming home from work 75% of the time and both my parents asleep to fox) then mentioned that the video games I play aren’t good for me.
Well at least the things in video games I can control because well…it’s a video game.
I miss my old dad….
