It was already said upthread, but this film would have been a brilliant opportunity to expose Western audiences to actors and artists who aren't part of the normal Celebrity List. It's a shame that that inner circle of buddies has to keep doing each other favors and giving multimillionaires even more money at the expense of the Little Guys.

Either him or Dan Castellaneta (the guy who voices Homer Simpson, Grampa Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Barney Gumble, Sideshow Mel, and others), since he did voice The Genie on the Aladdin direct-to-video sequels, the animated TV series, and a scene on an episode of The Simpsons where Bart befriends a Muslim boy and Homer thinks the boy's family are terrorists.

Considering the character of Genie was literally created for Robin Williams, whoever they were going to get to be him was going to have very big shoes (lamp?) to fill.

But I'm honestly surprised Eddie Murphy wasn't approached for the role (yes, Katzenberg suggested him, as well as Steve Martin and John Candy).

I'm fine with a black man playing the Genie. I'm less fine with it being Will Smith since the last good movie he was in was arguably Hancock or I Am Legend, both of which were almost a decade ago.

My only problem with the movie is that we're twenty years too late to have Will Smith playing a character like the Genie. Late 90s/early 20s Will Smith would have been fun to see playing that character.

Because, as far as I can tell, there hasn't been that much SJW salt. They ended up getting their Middle Eastern actors and everyone appears to be fine with it.
