The fact that he's actually been lowering the price actually says he IS able to learn things that don't directly benefit him. Which is quite a surprise to me.

Agreed. He is learning. Not as fast as he probably should, but is getting closer to the truth.

His original listing implied that he thought he would be lucky to get $100. A little high, but it could be described more as optimistic than stupid. He didn't realize that trolls would bid it up to tens of thousands, but that didn't occur to me either. So far, no problem.

After listing it a couple times, he learned the lesson that he couldn't leave it up to an open auction or he would be trolled. Unfortunately, simultaneously he "learned" people were willing to pay several thousand. Ok. One for two. Not bad.

So he figured he would list it with a buy it now, and also a make an offer. That way he could take a look at who was offering and accept whichever one he wanted. His logic was that he would be able to look at the ratings of the bidders and ignore anyone who didn't have a reasonable eBay history. He figured someone with a selling and buying history is less likely to be a troll. There is some logic to this plan. But it turned out that there were some trolls with eBay histories, and once again it was a fake bid. So he learned that he had to rely just on Buy it Now. He was right. He also learned he had to revise his price downwards. He looked at the bids in the previous auction and saw that they maxed out at $1000. Some logic behind that, he just didn't take into account that the person bidding that much was still a troll. He was on the right track, just fell short.

So far he has learned that he has to list it as Buy it Now. Also, after initially raising his expectations for price through the roof, he is slowly learning to lower them. Now he has listed it as Buy it Now for $1000. If he continues his pattern of very slowly figuring out what is going on, he will lower it when he gets no bites, until he is able to sell it. Probably for the $50-100 he was originally expecting.

Overall, I am reasonably impressed with how he has handled this, considering that it is Chris. Maybe after a week or two of trying, he will finally succeed into turning the picture into a few dollars. Unfortunately, I think that will come with a final lesson. He will "learn" that earning money from work is hard and leads to stress, but doesn't lead to vast fortunes, and give up on the idea.

Anyone who buys this drawing is :stupid:. Get in touch with me though afterwards, I have a sock worn by an extra on the set of the NBC hit Sean Saves The World for only $50. If that doesn't get your wallet open, I could sell you a piece of toilet paper that was looked at by Susan Powter.

Screencaps? Not everyone is on facebook.

Wait.. he's NOT Stan Lee? So I've been following the exploits of this 'Christian Chandler' for years now, waiting for the moment when the rubber suit would be pulled from the gangly frame of our loveable ol' Stan, for him to go all 'Excelsior, true Sonichu believers!' And now that moment will never come? Oh no!

By the way, what's Kathy's relationship to Chris? She sounds like she's a relative or something.

So I looked to see if there were any artists who had sold or exhibited art of a similar standard as Chris'.

And there were.

John Lurie, for instance, whose painting Bear Surprise spawned the Preved Medved meme.

Bear_surprise.jpg

Doesn't that have all the hallmarks of a Chandler - wonky perspective, crudely-drawn animals, speech balloons, eroticism?

Lurie describes his work as an extension of drawings that went on the fridge in his childhood.

I think that's the key. Lurie has the self-awareness to present his art as a return to childish naivete. Maybe he can draw better if he wants, although I think he has a debilitating illness.

Anyway. If the right...art manager (is that a thing?) could put a spin on Chris' work - how the realities of ageing more clearly highlight the beauty and impossibility in youthful dreaming, perhaps - then maybe Chris could become a niche figure in the art world.

inb4 it not happening, though
A lot of modern art does seems to be about marketing, I think Chris would be classified as an outsider artist, sadly they tend to only become famous after their death.

I can imagine future hipsters in 20xx pouring over Sonichu proclaiming it a genius commentary on the commercialism of the 90/00s.

Not to mention one TRUE and HONEST Sassy Tomgirl, wink-flirting against societal norms. CWC, the Kerouac of his generation. :left: AUGH YEAH

Marketing and bullshit, just an offtopic reminder
This shit

Was sold for 140 million dollars.

Ah, abstract/expressionist art. Some of it can be really good, but a lot of it are just delusional wannabe artists who do shit like the No. 5, 1948 and are really less about having actual talent for creating beautiful pieces of art and more about how talented they are at bullshitting and convincing other people (hopefully someone with a big bank account) the mess they made should somehow be considered a beautiful piece of art and therefore valuable.

If Chris were to somehow gain 100 IQ points (thus bringing him to 105) and were a smoother talker (MUCH smoother), I suppose he could somehow convince a sucker or two to actually buy his "Magnum Opus" on eBay for $100. Thankfully for everyone's sanity, Chris is dumber than a 5 year old (I think I just insulted 5 year olds) and cannot tell a convincing lie to save his life.
