Marathon 2025 - Bungie's new AAAA Extraction shooter

When doing a game like this you need to have each tier have its own weapons which have unique uses compared to lower tiers, but keep lower tiers competitive. Or you need to do something like
Grey quality = double barrel shotgun
Blue - pump shotgun
purple - auto-shotty
orange - drum mag auto-shotty
Iirc Hunt Showdown works or worked like that, with a very similar example, you have shotgun weapons ranging from a single shot tube to a double barrel, to a pump/lever action to finally semi auto. The single shot was a skill cannon with the longest one shot range, so for the most part the effectiveness in range and damage was lowered with how many rounds it could spit out quickly at higher round capacities. The single shot one had a higher range for one shot kills, the pump would be be in the middle, and the most advanced semi auto is the most specialized with the lowest one shot range. The shotguns undeniably got more advanced, but they kept a niche throughout and the cheapest gun had the most theorical ambush power that could help you dome someone for further than he could if he had a better shotgun
Tarkov partially had or has this, with cheap hunting rifles having some ammo types that could still punch through the more durable armors and still one shot headshot like the Vepr.

tarkov used to have great balance but they've really fucked it up by making the mid range ammo rare and the high end ammo so rare that you're essentially never going to use it as a tactic in a fight. But the guns like the vepr and the svt are great because they have absolutely DOGSHIT scope attachment options which makes them totally useless in move-and-go urban combat but they're phenomenal cheap marksman guns and an insane force multipler.

The SKS used to be in that category, but is a great example of how tarkov has gotten worse. it used to be a very powerful but cheap gun but now that 7.62x39 ps is a rare ammo type instead of a level 1 trader buy the gun and really the whole caliber is just trash in general. it doesn't have the armor penetration necessary for a rifle, nor the dps output compared to automatic rifles or smgs, and it's not accurate or hard hitting enough to be a marksman rifle, so it's essentially just scav bait. forcing players to use hollow points past like level 5 is just nikkita being pointlessly sadistic imo

Although, as I have heard, the major problem here is that there's an insane jump in defensive capabilities between a blue and purple quality shield where the person starts to become unkillable with lower tier weapons.

Every other extraction shooter lets you either minimize PvP (pve modes, larger/less crowded maps) or is balanced in a way that players 'feel' they have a chance at successfully making progress (objectives/extract with loot). Marathon as far as I know is the only one where not only does it all buy exclusively funnel you into pvp encounters, but there's no balancing to prevent your experience being the equivalent of joining a halo tdm where half your team has already left and you're getting spawn camped by rocket launchers.

Enter map, go towards objective, get fucked by a three stack with infinitely better shields/guns than you have. There's no 'skill' thats letting you win in a scenario like this, because the gear advantage is so extreme.

Nobody is having fun except the people getting those kills and their enjoyment is in knowing others aren't having fun. Why would anyone play this piece of shit game unless they think they're going to be the ones bullying new players? Everyone sensible just stops playing and goes back to ARC or shit that lets you not be mauled by 700 hours played ultrasweats.

Or you just go back to Tarkov because Marathon isn't the right type of CBT, I guess.

I have a feeling SP extraction games will slowly edge out the MP ones as the novelty wears out and people figure out how to adapt them better to SP. Grey Zone Warfare, Incursion Red River and Road to Vostok that are direct analogues to Tarkov are starting to pop up. smaller games like Witchfire and SULFUR are also carving out specific niches too. I do have a small feeling/copium that the final Marauders update just severs the PVP aspect and just leaves the PVE with a coop setting.

Its an interesting time for the extract shooter genre, Marathon really missed the mark by trying to make it full PvP

Not to mention if you ONLY care about PVP, why would you play an extraction shooter over any other kind of game like Destiny 2, Halo, CoD, Battlefield....

Hell, if Marathon actually WAS a battle royal it'd at least have balancing and design that lended itself to a pure PVP experience.

My friend picked up Marathon during the sale and said he was having a blast with a full squad. Does this game inject your brain with worms or some shit on startup? I've never heard him use "having a blast" before.

iirc it's a meme phrase for the brainwashed bungo fans over on the reddit. Blast havers are kinda like glazedivers and so on.

It is literal marketing wank, one of several pre-programmed phrases used in a swath of astroturfed marketing (including specific, key phrases that reviewers were ordered to use in their reviews of various games in the past few years). "Having a blast," "return to form for [the studio]," "a love letter to [genre]," "polished to a shine," "a breath of fresh air," "[studio] is back," "evolution, not revolution," etc.

One way I've seen it explained is that these are "low-information, high-enthusiasm filler" phrases. They're obviously pre-written and fed to marketing goons (including game reviewers) and "engagement farmers"/"shills" on social media of all kinds. They mean nothing, but they immediately identify you as "paid to promote" versus "actually playing the fucking thing."

The thing is, there are no genuine brainwashed bungo fans. Nobody genuinely thinks like those who post words like the above claim to think. The only people playing the game right now are a handful who genuinely like it (not really "brainwashing" in this case -- they are enjoying what they're playing), but then again when they talk about the game, they're generally not regurgitating the marketing wank. Or at least, not the specific programmed phrases anyway.

Oh I’m definitely a scorned D2 player. I want bungie to die for fucking the franchise I liked the most.
I feel the same way about Bethesda. Fuck them for dumbing down Fallout and doubling down on all their shit game design choices. It’s cathartic to pray for a studio’s downfall after one too many fuckups.

Not just cathartic, it’s almost biblical when it actually starts coming to pass. The fact that Bungie has finally fucked up enough to piss off most of their fans AND Sony is most likely gonna wax that ass as punishment?

Pure bliss.

I rated you optimistic not because I don't think this game will continue to fail epically, but in that there will be serious consequences. I doubt Sony will do anything that would shake investor confidence in them by giving Bungie a much-needed deep cleaning, especially given how much of the reputations of both their Japanese and American leadership are on the line. The Japanese will never admit failure of any sort because their culture demands face be kept and the Americans will never admit they're not on the right side of history.

Its why Sega axing Hyenas was such a big fucking deal: the Japanese just don't admit to fuckups.

AC: Shadows bombed epically and the guys in charge at Ubisoft worked out a deal with Tencent that leaves their shareholders with the empty sack.
I still hold out hope that Tencent isn't quite that retarded and they've worked out some clever way to scam the frogs somehow later on.

I agree with you, except for the fact that just a year or two ago, Sony’s Jap ceo (not the retarded German that runs US operations) was quoted basically saying he was not happy with Bungie and Sony US’ current performance. Hes not happy.

Granted, this is Jeet Google AI so, take it with a grain of salt, but:

I think Bungie has maybe one more game left in them before Sony beheads them for their dishonorable performance. Once more opportunity to completely fuck up.

As someone who plays Hunt Showdown I'm fair more worried about someone with a Romero (single shot) than I am most auto-shotguns. The Romero is going to shred you from a significant distance. Most people with an auto-shotty will just spew wildly and use it as a crutch. Damned effective up close but they're also gambling with a lot of money for just that.

I'm gonna say one more release. I don't think there's a whole new game between them and cancellation, I think it's going to come down to if they can get at least one game back on track, with a new expac or season.
