The Steven Universe artstyle has become a malignant cancer in fandoms everywhere.
It's easy to draw, easy to make ugly, and is from a shitty progressive cartoon show.
Thus, it has infected Tumblr artists everywhere and is utterly inescapable.
It's already been said, but I believe Steven Universe Lips™ are the new Tumblr Nose™. That said, I don't think the show is shitty- just overrated. Also, the art in the pilot was way better than the bastardized version of the director's style they used in the actual series.
Tumblr's doll community is a goldmine when it comes to sperging about how problematic toy lines are towards poc/lgbt, yet buy a fuck ton of dolls and "queer" them up. They seem to have a love hate relationship with Mattel's lines and take the dolls a bit personally.
The art is a mixed bag.

Some of those drawings- maybe a third- aren't half bad. As an artist, I actually prefer the fanart of the mouse one to the original design. Some of the monster designs can be pretty cluttered visually, so it's nice to see fanart that tidies the designs up. The cat girl and medusa fanarts are also okay.
The improvement meme one is actually kind of sad, though. Not only did their character design and anatomy get worse, but the composition is really awkward and crowded in the second one. Why is the Frankenstein girl crammed in there so awkwardly? Also, the red background is really distracting, and while the original grey wasn't a great choice either, at least it didn't draw attention away from the subjects.
Anyway, while I would never personally buy them, I think Monster High Dolls are such a cool concept, and if they had been around when I was a kid I probably would have enjoyed them. They have a lot more personality than Barbies, and they're a nod to Universal Monsters, which I think is fun. It reminds me of that one Ghoul School special of Scooby-Doo. I also like that the boy dolls are fashionable too, instead of being boring WASPs like Ken dolls were.
